I like the finger nail polish idea. I assume I should use anything but red or reddish colors to prevent pecking. Wouldn't the bread ties cause walking trouble? I tried zip pie ties once and they fell off too easy. I also tried very small dental rubber bands.
Okay here is the problem. I am over run with babies! I purchased 50 Cornish x chicks and all was well. Them my grandson took an incubator to school and 8 hatched there. And then I ,yes me myself and I, wanting some black autrolorps so now 14 have hatched today.....then the kicker the...
Can some one explain dry incubating? I know it should be self explantory, but curious. I just received my reptpro 6000 and set eggs today. Appears to be insufficient on water storage for humidity control. Thanks
I just purchased a breeding pair. I have a question concerning a nesting area. What reading that I have done indicates that the hen prefers to be hidden to lay. I have them in a run and coop. no nesting boxes in the coop. so I picked up a barrel today to make a nesting area. so it's a 55...
Can you brine a butterball branc of turkey? My mother-n-law received a 22 lb one from work. I get the pleasure of preparingi it. I read somewhere that I shouldn't because it is already injected with saline solution. The ingredients also confirm that. Can I brine by cutting back the salt...
I have what i thought was a pure breed of dark cornish. I have a rooster and 4 hens of laying age and some younger ones. I just hatched my first batch. the chicks are yellow with black stripes down their backs. I expected them to be all black and have a few lighter spots. They look...
I have been hatching eggs for years and just recently using the same incubators some of my eggs have rottoed and cracked in the incubator. Does any one know what has happened? The only thing that has changes is that I am hatching dark cornish birds now. They seem to be the only ones that...
I slaughter 8 birds on Sunday afternoon and put them in the frigerator to age. I went out this morning to bag and freeze them and the brine that I had them in was frozen. The refrigerator is in an out door building and with the outside temps dropping it must have caused it to freeze. Now...
The way I make it work is that I have two runs side by side the new chicks are in one and the older birds in the adjoining one. The only thing between them is chicken wire.
I let them get used to each other from a few weeks old to about 8 weeks. Then I put the young birds in with the older...
i had the same problem with about 1/2 of my flock. I put them all in the coop and closed them in for 2 weeks. Now after that they all go in and roost, like good little girls. I fed and watered them in there while they for closed in. But now due to other birds and squirrles i feed them...
I used 1/2 cup to gallon of water and soaked them in ice brine for three days. At least until the legs and wings moved freely. I them tookI replaced the brined daily. On the third day i took them out and rinsed them and placed them on a towel to dry for about 30 minutes and then vaccum...

i wrote an access database that I use. trackes eggs production and sales - hatching and misc notes. Nothing fancy. menu driven
i need to add breeding to it
i have tried freezer bags and even doubled them. The best results that I have are using the vaccum sealed package. It's great.
One other comment about the aging. I have aged some of my birds 24 hours and others I have aged longer. Here's what I discovered. 24 hours is not to my...
