Welsummer x Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks

Hello all, I am going to experiment with a Welsummer Roo crossed with Silver Penciled Rocks, hoping for some colorful sex-links. I would like to end up with silver heckles at some point on the pullets. I know there are crosses with Barred Rocks that give a Welbar in the second tier of...

Thinking of Grandpa Feeder…help with chicken weights

I have two 40# Grandpa Feeders in their outside run. One thing I picked up is to elevate them on a platform. Mine are 18 inches off the ground. They are well worth the money.

    Grandpas vs RentACoop Treadle Feeder

I have two Grandpa's Feeders the #40 versions and I am very pleased with them. My issue was with sparrows eating the feed. I also elevate the feeders on platforms, it seems to help when it rains. I am feeding ~20 birds.

    roost rack

I built a roost for my girls and spaced the boards about 18" apart with a 12" rise. I also used a 2 x 3(actual size 1.5" x 2.5"). I used a 1/4" round over router bit on the edges. They seem comfortable sitting on them. Just my two cents.

    Light Sussex

Yes, they kind of reminded me of Delawares or Columbians. Only three places in the US I have searched that sell them. The cross is called Gingernut Ranger. Good egg producer.

    Light Sussex

Hello all, Been a while since I posted. I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. Man the time flies for sure. I am looking at maybe getting some Light Sussex for doing some experimenting with crossing them up with either a RIR or New Hampshire Red roo. I am finding not many places have them and...

Broody hen and no fertile eggs.

One of my Barnevelders went broody. Wishing I had some Welsummer eggs to put under her. How can I get the hens that are laying to use the other boxes? I have fourteen total, some are still young. Three or four are laying now. I have heard some say to use a glass egg or other lure I guess...

    Black Soldier Fly Larva

Hello all, Been awhile since I been on here. Started a compost bin/trap in hopes of luring some BSF. Today I saw an adult near the bin. I installed some corrugated cardboard in hopes of gathering eggs, there are several large larva (I won't say the m word) in the bin. I need to construct a...

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

It would make sense that if the nipples were at a comfortable level they would get more water. Indeed it is essential to be mindful of the behaviors and changes during heat. We have been having days with temps in the mid 90s all month. Yesterday I put out a dusting mixture of peat moss, soil...

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

Interesting and thanks for the feedback. I have been working with my chicks to get them used to my hand as well. Yes the vent is important so it doesn't create a vacuum. I have been checking out some YouTube videos on various watering systems. Many have mentioned a plan b for water using...

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

I agree. I am intending on training my chicks that are now about two weeks old. Some say they will not be strong enough to trip the metal valve. I will share my findings.

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

I tried the vertical a few years back and they were terrible. Some had luck with them but I didn't. I am interested in something that won't freeze during the winter months.

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

After a lot of research, I decided to go with the horizontal water nipples. I found a couple threads on this in this forum. How many of you are using them and how do you like/dislike them?

    Got a few chickens again

Thanks everyone, we went on a "chicken run" today. Picked up 8 more baby chicks. Couple Black French Copper Marans, two Beilefelders and four Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. The experience was interesting. Cackle Hatchery was having a sale, I thought cool, I'll go down and be there when they...

    Got a few chickens again

Hello all, Been a while since a had a small flock. We started with some Barnevelders, Beilefelders, and a couple of Barred Rock chicks about two months ago. We have seven total. Looking to pick up some Blue Laced Red Wyandottes if I can find them reasonable. A few years ago my son and I...
