Noticed this afternoon that this hen has a swollen left cheek. She’s acting normal but I don’t know what the cause might be. Just wondering if anyone out there has any advice.
As a side note...incase it matters, Margaret does this a lot to the others:
This is NOT my chicken...just a photo I found that looks exactally like Margarer to demonstrate her behavior.
I know there are pros to keeping a roo around but for me the cons just win out. All of the extra things that come with keeping a roo is something I’m not ready for as a new chicken mum. Maybe one day down the road.
My approximate timeline for the comb...obvious 3 rows of peas around 4-5 weeks...started to pink up around 6-7? It’s always had really thick legs (which sparked my suspicion right away) and has always had this upright “in the boss” stature
Okay folk...the gorgeous white bird in the photo is Margaret. I have suspected for a while that Margaret is actually ‘Man-gret’ and have loosely set up a new home for him if my suspicions are correct.
All of the experience out there on BYC will likely be able to give me a concrete answer - I’d...
My hope if we can’t resolve her issue now is that her body will just deal with it when it comes time to lay...however I’ve also heard terrible stories and as a newbie to chickens I’m terrified of the worst case scenario. Your story gives me a glimmer of hope that maybe it’ll all work out okay.
Everything about her feels normal...I haven’t had any worries about the actual structure of her body. I do think the tail points down because since she was little she’s always had massive wings that wrapped over the tail (I used to call her my condor). There also isn’t any odor that makes me...
She is supposed to be an Ameraucana...I purchased her from a reputable hatchery. I’ll look more into the two breeds you mentioned. I think her tail being down is just a result of being born with gigantic wings that pinned her tail down when she was little?
The only antibiotics I’ve used have...
Thanks for your insight! I don’t think constipation is an issue...she never seems to struggle at all to poop. Maybe I’ll try some wet feed...can’t hurt and everyone will think it’s a treat!
Sorry, I was referring to the wrong pic (thought you meant the vent pic). The “hump” on her back is just feathers pushing up between her wings - my little hunchback lol
It’s tricky to find what to do because of her age. When she was brand new I could just say “oh, it’s because she’s got a pasty bum” and clean her and take the steps suggested to clean it and put it back in. And she’s not old enough to have it be related to egg laying. I really do think it’s got...
I’m not sure Patsy (my girl I need help with) would appreciate being wrapped up either. And wouldn’t the sling create more pasty butt issues? That’s the last thing she needs
This has been constant since we got her...so roughly 10 weeks. I pop it back in and sometimes it stays in for a bit before popping back out, other times it pops out as soon as we put her on the ground
