Big Plastic Owls. I lost a dozen young chickens this year to hawks and vultures before I placed 3 plastic owls along the run. There are 7 vultures in the 1st pic and there have been no more since the 2nd pic.
I think noises will set them off, playing this gets an immediate response from my Roos, Jimi Hendrix sets them off but not as well.
Before I brought them in at night, something got them crowing, and I'm sure it was some noise-not from me, but sound triggers them.
I use live traps outdoors, we have rats, mice and many more skunks, opossum and raccoon.
Only live traps now, since a young hen flew out of the run and sampled the peanut butter in a rat spring trap. The fires every year have driven a lot of creatures out the more rural areas.
We're in the City limits, so our boy has a "no crow" collar which makes him sound like he's got emphysema, and since the 1st time he crowed at 3am, he's spent every night in a dog kennel in the laundry room.
If anyone was following, sorry for the delay. Final tally on day 23 out of 18 eggs, 9 failed to develop, 2 fully developed but didn't absorb their yolks and died in the shell, and 7 healthy chicks are doing fine.
lock down Thurs and hope to see those chicks next Sat. Here are pix of daddy and his daughter from last hatch. Cemani dad and americauna mom. I like the cheek puffs.
out of 18 eggs, 6 were not developing, the hottest one to develop had been 110 degrees, not much above the average chicken temp of 105 to 107. It was 119 in the shade in our backyard yesterday at 3PM and all my birds are enjoying the misting system I put in for them.
I've been saving eggs for the next batch of hatchlings, but the ambient temperature here has been 110F to 117F and by the time I collect eggs from the coop some have measured (with my frared thermometer) at 117f to 119F. Think they might be viable? Any experience with this?
Thank you
