Ok. I think I like the idea of indoor the hen house food and out in the run water. There is a lot of wildlife near me and I don't want to invite the hungry and curious nighttime prowlers. Only issue I have with that is heating water in freezing temps. I have an outlet in the hen house, but...
I'm reading through past posts but wondering what you all are thinking nowadays:
I recently increased the size of my flock from 5 to 12.
I increased the size of the run to > 20' x 12' because I'm no longer allowing them to free range b/c of predators.
The old owner had feeder and waterer in...
They love to free range so I've assumed they've been happy, but some of them are pretty aggressive towards the chicks. There was some odd running around, bursts of flightiness, and squalking that I'd never noticed before when they used to free range more. ..
I stopped letting them free range...
Ok, thanks. I see no other symptoms. They've been stealing the chicks water from inside the cage haha, but I can start to give them extra in the run on hot days. Thanks for the tip.
I couldn't find where to add my location to my profile, but I edited this post with it:
located in...
Certainly possible I'm noticing something now that's always been as I watch the more acutely. It struck me as unusual and I've been worrying a but about the stress I've introduced by adding chicks.
Today was hot, maybe 85-90. The time I noticed it was 7pm and had to be 70-75. Not that hot and...
Edit: located in HudsonValley area of NY. that's USDA Planting zone 6a.
Hi,
I have 5 hens 2-3 years old. Tonight I noticed 3 of them breathing with their mouths open. It looks unusual, I've never noticed them doing that before.
Here's what's been going on around here in case it helps.
1)...
She got her first dose of nutri drench around 2pm, and another dose at about 5:30. Each time about .25 mL direct, and some water.
She looks worse. She's convulsing. The other chicks are still walking over her. It's really sad. What else can I be doing ??
Thx for advice
Hi, thanks for reading and any suggestions.
I ordered 9 chicks from Meyer. They arrived yesterday morning. 8 seem very strong and healthy. 1 of the chicks though is very lethargic. She rarely lifts her head off the pine shavings. The others often walk over her.
I will see her in different...
Just called the post office and they said that they haven't arrived and they guess they'll be here in the morning even though the tracking says by 3pm today. I'm a little concerned ...
I can't seem to figure out if they're going to bring them with the regular mail (like every other package) or if i'll need to go pick them up at the post office as Meyer Hatchery seems to warn in their communications.... How'd you get confirmation that they're coming to your house on a mail truck?
Ya, that might be a good suggestion.
Cons (admittedly some of these are superficial):
· Overall color diversity of flock would be lower than if I change Brahma for Cochin or just add Cochin
· Slightly Less eggs from cochin vs leghorn
- Very low # of white eggs, which is something the leghorns...
Ok. Based on availability I'm looking to add to my 2 Golden Buffs with:
1 black polish
2 white leghorn
2 lakeshore eggers
2 Easter eggers
2 buff brahma standard
Should I be concerned with the size of the buff brahma? Meyers site says they're 9.5 - 12 lbs which is double the size of the other...
