Thanks for asking! I just now saw this. She seems to be doing better, I put some BluKote and Rooster Booster on there the first day and they haven't been picking at her since. I've also been letting them out in the yard as much as possible, even though they have more than 10 sq ft per...
Hi everyone -
I went out this morning to check on the chickens and I have a pullet with a small circle of feathers missing right in front of her tail. There is a little bit of blood, and some of the feathers are half gone. There are a few feathers around the coop from her, but only about three...
I watched them more today and it seems like she only does it when the other one is about to lay an egg. Once the egg is laid she leaves her alone. So odd!
We have five pullets (hopefully) and I noticed today that one of the Buff Orpingtons follows one of the Barred Rocks around, inseparable. This would be super cute, except whenever the Barred Rock lays down, the other one lays on top of her. It looks like she's pecking her comb, but I can't...
My fiance and I put the finishing touches on the coop tonight and our ladies are spending their first night outside... aah! It's supposed to be 50 degrees outside, and they're 6 weeks old. They're going to be okay, right? Is 50 degrees too cold for them? I think I'm going to be out at least...

I know this is an old-ish thread, but I'm so glad to read this! It means all my "pullets" are actually girls!!
edit: under a year old girls are pullets - not hens. oops!
My chicks are two and a half weeks old and I'm starting to plan their coop (a little late in the game, I know! ). I'm wondering about the flooring - I was planning on doing deep litter like so many others on here, but then I saw this grass carpeting (essentially Astroturf) at Home Depot and...
We added the apple cider vinegar to the water and we've been watching her for a few days, she seems to be doing much better. Should we keep the cider vinegar in the water for a while still or switch them back to plain? Thanks so much for your help!
WE DID IT!!!! It took two hours and a few times I almost gave up... but we finally got it off. What a horrible night! I feel like such a bad chicken mom but I suppose it really wasn't my fault, it seems like if there's trouble they'll find it. Thank you all for your support! It's hard to believe...
I heard a huge raucous and came into the office to find that a chick had a string of duct tape stuck in her mouth, and it was still attached to the box. We released her from the box but the string is still in her mouth. When I pull (lightly!) on the string her tongue pulls out with it, and at a...
I have 4 Barred Rocks:
Martha
Harriet
Edith
Frances
and 2 Buff Orpingtons:
Eliza
Lady Bird
I read on here somewhere that someone named their birds after first ladies and I loved the idea!
Hi all! I have 6 chicks that were born 8 days ago, and all seem to be doing great except for one. I can't really tell if something is actually wrong with this little gal or if she's just not as active and inquisitive as the other birds. For the past couple days she's been lethargic, although she...
Hi all!
I'm so glad that I found this site! It's been my go-to site for chicken questions. I've never had chickens before, but I picked up my first chicks last Friday, four Barred Rocks and two Buff Orpingtons. For the first two days I poked them or tapped the cardboard every time they laid...
I'm so excited to read your blog! I skimmed through it really quick and I absolutely LOVE the drawings. So adorable, and what a great addition!
ETA: I just read through and laughed so hard I cried. Thank you! Looking forward to reading more about their adventures!
