I heard a huge raucous and came into the office to find that a chick had a string of duct tape stuck in her mouth, and it was still attached to the box. We released her from the box but the string is still in her mouth. When I pull (lightly!) on the string her tongue pulls out with it, and at a certain point she starts crying. I don't know what to do!

I've been there and done this one. The string has to be wrapped around the tongue. It took me 2 hours and the help from someone else to hold the bird. You will need a small pair of scissors. Like the beard trimming ones.

You'll have to work them under the string so that you can cut it. I have no idea how they get it wrapped around the tongue. But, mine had it wrapped so tight that if I hadn't of gotten it off, she would have probably lost her tongue.

It can be done, just stay calm. Have whomever can help you to wrap the bird in a towel.

I hope you can get it cut off.

This just happened to me!! I had two friends help me. I held the bird, another held the mouth open, and the third cut the string with my pair of embroidery scissors (they are like needles at the points).
The thread was tightly wound around the BASE of the tongue, but the gal (only 15 yrs. old) had a steady hand, remained calm, and was able to snip if off. The bird is doing fine now. Oh, I know what you're
feeling!!

Oh yes, it's a horrible feeling! I had just gotten my Coronation Split Sussex hen shipped to me and the next day my dog drug her out of the cage, thankfully.... I got to her in time and the very next day is when she swallowed the string.

It was horrible and I feel badly for the OP as I know she is terribly upset right now. Hope she gets the string off.

WE DID IT!!!! It took two hours and a few times I almost gave up... but we finally got it off. What a horrible night! I feel like such a bad chicken mom but I suppose it really wasn't my fault, it seems like if there's trouble they'll find it. Thank you all for your support! It's hard to believe how attached I am to these little buggers after just 10 days!

ETA: I've never been so relieved in my life. I still can't believe it! Thank you guys!

if you put alittle olive or vegetable oil on the tape it will come off very easily. When I was younger I had a mouse get out of its cage and we had to put sticky traps all over the house. We finally caught him and put vegetable on him to get him unstuck. works great on any kind of tape too.

I think the silly birds believe they have caught a worm, they try to eat my shoe strings.

The back of the chickens toung has a (< )in the back , the string gets caught under it and sometimes gets tangled, once you cut the string around the tangle it should pull right out.
