Scissor Beak in a 3 week old chick

Hello, BYC! We hatched 7 wonderful, healthy chicks in my classroom 3 weeks ago. As it has grown, one of the chicks has shown itself to have what looks to me like severe scissor beak. I’ve read that scissor beak tends to get worse as chicks grow. Considering that this little one is 3 weeks...

12+ Hours After pipping, membrane looks dry - do I moisten it?

I had read and reread a few of these already! Thank you for sharing - I’m definitely learning a lot and plan to get a better thermometer and a hygrometer for my next hatch! So far we have 8 babies in the brooder, egg 9 of 10 has pipped, and we will keep waiting on the last egg! So far I’m very...

12+ Hours After pipping, membrane looks dry - do I moisten it?

I ended up slipping a wet paper towel in to increase the humidity... and overnight it hatched! I’m glad I didn’t interfere any more than I did - like I said, I am new at this and didn’t want to make things worse! Yes, I eventually did. I was weighing the benefits of not opening the bator while...

12+ Hours After pipping, membrane looks dry - do I moisten it?

This is only my 2nd ever hatch, so I’m VERY new at this. Yesterday, eggs were pipping and we had our first hatch during the day. Last night around 9:30, the egg in question pipped slightly. Today, I swore I saw it jiggle a bit. I’ve been checking in periodically and it appears as though the...

Swollen, possibly injured eye and thick mucus? substance in mouth

I’ve been researching Marek’s as well as Coryza but the blood around her eye was making me lean toward an injury. If she got injured, could shock cause the mucus buildup? I hate to be hoping for an injury, but I can help an injury... Marek’s and Coryza don’t have treatment, correct?

    What breed is this rooster?

I finally got a better picture of him - with my work schedule I kept getting home after dark! I think he must be a mixed breed. I haven’t found anything quite like him online, but you are all more expert at this than me!

    What breed is this rooster?

He has clean legs - later on today I can post a better picture. Forgive me for my ignorance, but what is the difference between a project bird and mixed breed?

    What breed is this rooster?

He is beautiful, no doubt! He was given to us tonight, close to twilight so I’ll have to get a better picture tomorrow when he’s not hunkered down! Thank you for your help!

    Hello from VA!

I’ve been a long time user of BYC for advice, but didn’t make my own account until today! We currently have 6 hens and 1 rooster and will be incubating some eggs in the spring (I teach kindergarten so I do it in the classroom). Looking forward to more great advice from all of you
