    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Well, I did it! I moved them out Saturday afternoon. Heat plate and all. I had deep shavings on about 2/3 of the floor and loose hay on the rest. I put the screen door fly cloths up and a tall x-pen across the door way. They managed to slip thru the slats on that, so I put a sheet over it. They...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Well, obviously I got carried away when I bought these kids and with 19, they quickly outgrew the brooder space I had set up for them (A dog x-pen with sheet draped over it). So yesterday I set up the coop with bedding and today I moved the heat plate out there along with all of them, their food...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Thanks! I like that idea a lot! I'll give it a try before the rain comes back.

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been setting things up in the plastic coop and am re-thinking the door situation. I don't have much of a predator problem here. But I have a lot of plastic lattice left over from other uses. Maybe that will be the door until they can go outside. Here our...

    Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

These hay bales were for feeding livestock and NO spray on them. We used them for a dog game called Barn Hunt. Last October was our last trial of that, so now we have all the hay bales left over. There will still be other dog activities going on out in the barn, but they don't need the bales...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Yes, with the door closed it will be a bit dark, but I am an early riser (usually up by 5), so I can go out and open the door if need be. One reason I had wanted to leave at least one door open. It faces the East, so the sun comes pouring in first thing. I'm off to the feed store and I'll get...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Okay, thanks. I'll get some today. Do I just put it out for them free choice?

I'm feeding the Purina medicated starter. Should I get some grit besides?

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

For the draft idea, I think I'll hang a few strips of surveyors tape and see if they get blown at all. The ventilation I've added are all up high (near the roof line). but with the door open... I was planning on putting a 4' high board across that opening (only one door open for now.)

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Securing the lamp won't be a problem. I probably will get the coop set up and ready today, then put the heat lamp up and watch the temp to see how it goes. I can close the doors at night to keep it warmer in there, but wanted to leave it open for the natural light to shine in. Since this shed is...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

Thanks! I've been going back and forth over the heat lamp thing. I can hang it from the ceiling, so it is well away from the shavings. The temp out there last night was 34 (with the door wide open. I can close it at night. I'm worried the heat plate is no longer big enough for them all to get...

    Moving Chicks to the Coop

I have 19 two to three week old chicks living my spare bedroom. I made a pen for them using a dog x-pen covered with sheets. They have one of those heat plate things for warmth. I keep my house fairly cool (low to mid 60's in the day and low 50's at night). I live in the Ferndale area of Western...

    Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Just found this thread and wanted to add my bit. I'm a bit long in the tooth (78) and the old knees and back complain about bending down or crawling around, so this year a garden buddy (wh0's 84) and I are experimenting with Straw Bale gardening, except we are using hay bales. These are OLD...

    Coops for 15 hens?

The chicken yard is pretty good size and will grow this fall. It goes around 3 sides of the coop, so they can be out of the weather. It also has a good sized Wisteria bush in front, a Snowball bush and a huge rose bush on the South side (prevailing wind direction) and the Walnut tree will become...

    Coops for 15 hens?

I have 19 chicks and am converting a plastic garden shed into their coop. It is 7-1/2 x 7-1/2 and I am putting some extra ventilation in it. Their fenced yard is already done, but now need to build roosts and nesting boxes. My hens are a variety of breeds, all brown egg layers, so heavy breeds...

    Bedding for the Coop?

I have a LOT of loose grass hay available. I have been putting it in the chicks brooder pen and they seem to like it. I thought I would put it in the coop (plastic shed with plastic floor) fairly deep for the bedding. What do you think?

Most of the mail order chicks arrived dead.

They came from Meyer and they have said they will give me a refund. I just need to send them photos of the survivors. One interesting thing. One little girl (the rare breed one) was not too energetic and I wasn't sure she was going to pull through. BUT when I added in the new chicks from the...

Most of the mail order chicks arrived dead.

Thanks. I'm sure the birds say thank you too. The whole gang seem to be getting along great. I find I'm sitting in my chair and watching them way too much. Good thing I'm retired and have the free time to spend.

Most of the mail order chicks arrived dead.

I had a mixed batch, so trying to figure out what survived. I know one Partridge Penedenca made it and I think one Maran. Not sure about the others. I did go down to the feed store and got some more chicks. Got 4 Wellsomer, 4 Delaware and 6 Golden sex link. Only the Delaware are bigger by a...
