How do you set temperature on a heat plate?

They are getting out to eat and drink and scratch just fine, then run back under :) One is smaller and spend more time under the plate but I guess that's normal if she's a runt. thanks for reassuring me lol

it's at the lowest possible right now so I guess as long as they aren't acting overheated they should be fine :/

How do you set temperature on a heat plate?

I am a first time chick mom and since I am brooding them in the house I chose to use a heat plate for safety, but I am puzzled as to how I am supposed to set the temperature. When the thermostat probe is on the plate, I get a good temp reading, but if I put it on the bedding under it drops...

How many chicks should I get?

I can’t keep more than 2 because city only allows 4 and I have 2 other layers already. So chick losses aren’t that common? Depending where I read it’s either to be expected or rare -_- I was also worried that only 2 chicks would not be ideal for them -I always see people brooding bigger groups...

How many chicks should I get?

I have to replace 2 of my layers next year and (FINALLY!!) found someone in my area who has races we'd like to have. We would love to try and brood the chicks so they can get used to us. Problem is I don't know how many chicks I should get. They are sexed so I don't have to worry about roos. I'm...

Some pointy questions about Cream legbars

Oh I'm reassured then! I'm just never sure if what we do can be called 'Free ranging' because we don't have that much space compared to a lot of chicken owners I see

Some pointy questions about Cream legbars

So I am currently researching for my next addition to the backyard coop, and we really like Cream Legbars but I read they do better free ranging. I have a coop with a small run but the chickens free range in the yard pretty much all day (we put them in the run when nobody's home, but there's 4...

Tyrannical chicken endangering my new addition!

I don't have measurements but I have pictures. This is the summer coop And the winter coop: For 4 chickens I think this is plenty. They free range all day in my yard and have plenty of hidey holes in the garden and rasperry patch. The bad behavior is mostly when food is offered and at...

Tyrannical chicken endangering my new addition!

I'm a new chicken owner, only started last year so everything is hard right now lol. I've recently added a rescue adult chicken, Beatrice, to my flock of 3. I know adding them in pair is easier but legally I can only have 4 so that was my limit. I've read about it beforehand and tried to do the...

    Weird egg, I need advice!

My Sussex hen just laid this in the box. She's a year and a half and appear perfectly healthy, eating, drinking, etc. Her last egg was 2 days ago and normal. She has access to calcium supplement and free range in my yard. I have no idea what that weird second yolk is. Any idea on what could have...

First winter with a flock, I have some worries...

Thank you so much for all the explanations guys. I googled a lot while building the coop and I thought I had all the answers lined up but I had trouble finding infos for coops in real harsh winters. I have only one vent so I will add another, and try moving the roost around (they roost with no...

First winter with a flock, I have some worries...

I have three, but the coop is quite large for 3 chickens (so they wouldn't be able to heat it with their body heat). Also they tend to sleep away from the heater. We have a hair vent at the top of one wall, that's it. No sure it that's enough :/

First winter with a flock, I have some worries...

We have insulated part of our shed so we could keep our chicken inside through the winter. I live in Canada so temps can (and will)) go down to -30 C this winter. We bought this heater thinking it will be enough, but now I'm not sure. Temp in the coop is barely above zero today with the heater...

Bumblefoot-need reassurance that I did it right!

The wound looked good yesterday but she managed to get her dressing dirty and it kind of reopened this morning- poor thing. I checked inside again but nothing would come out. I double-bandaged it and now she's mad at me and walking funny XD

Bumblefoot-need reassurance that I did it right!

Thank you so much again. I just redid her bandage and the swelling is a little less than yesterday, but I did a bigger hole than I thought I would do so I'll keep it wrapped for a few days for sure. Phew! First time for everything! I must say it was quite the bonding experience because she's my...

Bumblefoot-need reassurance that I did it right!

Thank you so much guys. She's still hobbling this morning but seem better. How long should I dress the wound? I haven't removed the original one yet, but I guess it'll get dirty real quick as they free-range in my yard

Bumblefoot-need reassurance that I did it right!

I'm a new chicken owner and only had my girls since last may, but they have been active and heathy so far, until this morning when I discovered what Bumblefoot was -_- Sadly I didn't catch it in time and it was very swollen (see pic) I've researched the surgery way on bumblefoot and being a...

Concerned about my new chicken run.

I didn't know weasels were nocturnals. I've seen them during the day, I'm guessing they were not hunting then
