How many chicks should I get?

I have to replace 2 of my layers next year and (FINALLY!!) found someone in my area who has races we'd like to have. We would love to try and brood the chicks so they can get used to us. Problem is I don't know how many chicks I should get. They are sexed so I don't have to worry about roos. I'm guessing losses are commons, but I'm reading and checking everything to ensure they stay healthy, so realistically how many should I buy to insure you get at least 2 healthy chickens?

Anything more than 2 for replacing two..... chicken math strikes and you have six.

How much room in coop and run do you have? I personally would figure max number of chickens in your existing space, then pick a number you’re comfortable with from 2 to that max number.

you have to prepare for the possibility that they all make it. so between keeping the extras and/or rehoming them (like actually knowing someone who'd take them), dont get more than that.

I can’t keep more than 2 because city only allows 4 and I have 2 other layers already. So chick losses aren’t that common? Depending where I read it’s either to be expected or rare -_- I was also worried that only 2 chicks would not be ideal for them -I always see people brooding bigger groups.

I could probably rehome one, they’re pretty rare breeds for my area, so I’ll try my luck with 3 I guess! Thank for the help!
