I have a wonderful 1 year old Speckled Sussex Roo. He is big, healthy, and protective of his girls. He crows from sunrise to sundown, which is not a problem because we live out in the country. But, he also makes another noise starting about one hour before sunrise every morning. It sounds like...
What a great rooster you have. We have a Speckled Sussex rooster who is also very sweet. He will wait at the coop door while his ladies are laying. When they emerge he screams the egg laying song. He is so loud that I find myself going outside to make sure that no one is being attacked.
Thanks for all of the responses.
I agree that the photo could be poop, but the center of the item is actually like a hollowed out piece of beef jerky with the feathers intact on the exterior.
Now that it has been a while, and no one's butt has fallen off, the only logical explanation is that...
That could be it. The run in covered, but my chickens love sticking their heads through the fencing and grabbing sticks and such. Would chickens kill a smaller wild bird that wandered into their area?
No one is missing and no one is injured. Sorry for the poor pic quality. It sounds silly, but it looks like a piece of my rooster just fell off. I was hoping to hear "Oh, yeah, that part falls off of all roosters at 9 months". :)
Hello,
This morning while collecting eggs in my chicken run, I noted what appeared to be a small pile of feathers that look to match the feathers of my Speckled Sussex cockerel. After closer examination, I realized that this was a chunk of what appeared to be hollowed out, dried skin slightly...
I have a single blue silkie, who never received a proper name. We refer to her (it) as Little One. She is 5 months, and has not shown any signs of egg laying. I what have your experiences been with silkies in regards to egg laying?
The plot thickens. Our newly identified Amberlink has laid an egg every day since my last post (awesome). Today we got 2 eggs; our daily beautiful large brown egg and an apparently early (small) white egg. I am thinking perhaps leghorns and amberlinks were mixed at the store. Thoughts?
Thanks for the info. After looking at pictures of silkie eggs online, I think the smaller egg may have come from her. Not only is she the sweetest of the flock, but now she's one of the first producers.
They did...as did my 2 Speckled Sussex "pullets" who started cockadoodle dooing at 12 weeks! Luckily my neighbor needed a rooster, and the other has become a well mannered leader of the flock (for the time being).
I am open to the idea of my girls being White Rocks, however, their build and personality don't match what I've read about White Rocks. These girls are lean and a little flighty. Or, maybe I perceive them to be that way because I thought they were Leghorns?
