    Loose spur

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately she passed away in the night. There was obviously a lot more going on, she deteriorated very quickly, poor girl. 😢

    Loose spur

Thanks. Yes loose spur is the right one, and the other foot is definitely just as swollen if not moreso. There’s no wounds on either foot to suggest bumblefoot ( though I understand there is not always a scab visible for bumblefoot). The abdomen is actually quite thin, she hardly weighs a...

    Loose spur

I will soak feet again in epsom salts this afternoon then try to gently stabilise the spur with vetwrap, and see how she goes, but she seems to have gone downhill very quickly.

    Loose spur

Have taken some more pics. I’m keeping her inside as she can barely walk. Sleeping most of the day and doesn’t seem very interested in food or water, even treats (soaked bits of bread). Feet both seem very sore. Poo is very watery. Beginning to wonder if it’s more than just the spur that’s the...

    Loose spur

Thanks for your reply. I’ll try this for a few days and see if the swelling goes down. Any thoughts on why both feet would be a bit swollen? The spur on the other leg is normal.

    Loose spur

Thanks so much for your advice. If I removed it entirely, is there an alternative to aspirin I could use for pain relief?

    Loose spur

Thanks for your reply. There doesn’t seem to be any bruising on the leg itself or any injury around the spur. I’ve popped some pictures up. Hmm I can’t think what might have caused the injury, something with that much force, it has me stumped.

    Loose spur

Sorry, just took some photos this morning. There’s no sign of trauma around the spur but I can move it around 360 with my fingers, whereas the other spur is normal- firmly attached. Can’t think what might have happened to cause this. This morning she didn’t come outside and is limping badly. I...

    Loose spur

My Buff Orpington hen has large spurs, approx 4cm. She was limping today and I noticed that one of the spurs is suddenly flexible, I can move it around quite freely as if it is no longer attached on the inside (outer skin is still attached as normal and there is no sign of injury, blood etc)...

    Fox attack, big flesh wounds

Thanks, I can get tetracycline in a powder which mixes in the drinking water, I’ll try that, along with the 2 antiseptics I’ve been applying 3x per day (clorhexidine spray and betadine iodine ointment). Access to antibiotics is regulated in Australia, you can’t get it without a prescription, we...

    Fox attack, big flesh wounds

Thanks for the info, the pics are helpful! I’m in Australia, sorry! I covered the wounds to stop feathers sticking in it, as the open gash is under her wing. But will try leaving the cover off. I’m keen to know if an oral antibiotic for birds would be a good idea in place of antibiotic...

    Fox attack, big flesh wounds

Update: This morning she is looking quite perky, eating, drinking, and having an annoyed peck at us when we were checking the wound. She has diarrhoea but I think that’s probably normal after stress plus maybe the aspirin? Her appearance gives me some hope she’ll live, though that gaping wound I...

Thank you, that’s good to know, I wonder what their reluctance is. I will see how she is in the morning and reassess.

    Fox attack, big flesh wounds

Thank you that's good to know it doesn't need to be closed up right now. I have some vetwrap and a gauze pad too, so I'll be doing this as soon as my husband gets home to help hold her still. She was trying to peck at the area when I sprayed on the Clorhexedine antiseptic (I guess it it must...
