Review by 'Beccackle' in article 'Do Poultry Mourn Over The Loss Of A Flock Mate?'

It's no surprise to me that our fellow animals have feelings and express them. I commend those who observe and care.

Love it! Thanks for explaining how this chicken math works. For me, it's intuitive, but I'm glad to know there is a mathematical logic...also, appreciated those practical demonstrations of how it is applied 😂

Trees next to run? I want to tell my husband he is wrong

I think you are both right: it's I think you are both right: trees are important for shade, wind protection and aesthetics but can also provide a handy place for predatory birds to rub their dastardly wings together. We used bailing twine strung from the run fence to the roof of the coop about...

Help! My wife is mad at me for feeding the chickens pizza!

I'm not an expert, but I feel that everything in moderation is all right, except for the foods that are known to be poisonous to chickens, like rhubarb and avocados. My flock enjoys a little bread sometimes and pizza crust is no different. As far as being nutritious, cheese is high in protein...

Comment by 'Beccackle' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

There are strict health rules regarding sprouts sold commercially. They need to be grown in a way that minimizes any chance is pathogens. I sprout wheatgrass and peas for my chickens. If only my husband and I ate as well as my chickens do😁

I wouldn't have thought of it, but someone told me they did, so I gave them a little. Make sure it is not the store bought processed kind as it would have no probiotic benefits.

Comment by 'Beccackle' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

My flock absolutely loves milk kefir which I give them every day with their mash. To add to the fermented benefits, I sometimes throw in some homemade sauerkraut which they also enjoy. The fermented feed sounds like it would be another great option. I'm going to try it. Thanks! My condolences...

    Feather loss in recovering hen

That's what I was hoping for because I hate to think of it being a sign of failing health or an infestation of mites. I treat her about a week ago.

    Feather loss in recovering hen

When tucking the flock in on Dec 27th, I was shocked to find a hen with a horrible open wound on her breast. She has been seen by a veterinarian and her treatments are leading to a complete recovery. My question is, why would she be losing feathers? There are the fluffy under feathers and even...

Guess what season it is in the Northern Hemisphere?! - Its FODDER Season! 🍀

In my experience, rinsing the sprouts in their trays at least twice a day and ensuring that they are not sitting in water eliminates mold.

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Raising Chickens?

Started keeping chickens in May 2019; unfortunately it was a rocky start when my flock was diagnosed with Marek's disease. From 12, we're down to 4: a rooster, 2 robust egg-laying hens and one remaining and lonely bantam roo.

    Pesticide for Lice Treatment

I appreciate your feedback. Yes, I am in Canada. I had treated the chickens in August, but recently became aware that there was a resurgence of lice. I was just concerned that the solution I made up was not expired."

    Pesticide for Lice Treatment

Can anyone tell me how long the solution of Debantic 50 WP is effective? I made the .5% solution in August and used it again recently, but am worried that it may lose its efficacy over time. I didn't see that info anywhere.

She's Beyond Saving - What Can I Do?

I was going to treat her for lice, but then saw how badly she was doing and just left her in the hospital box. She died quickly on her own...more quickly than I expected. Thank goodness it was fast. I was looking for an easy answer, but I know there isn't one. Thank you for your responses.

She's Beyond Saving - What Can I Do?

Flock has Marek's. Banty picked on so I brought her inside to nurse. She stopped eating yesterday and I found lice on her. She is anaemic, eyes closed, listless, not moving, no more poop. How can I ease her suffering?
