I know this is an old post, but I am hoping to hear what the outcome was? I have some polish that look like the picture, and it would be helpful to know. Are these roos or pullets?
Beyond our own flock, we are raising some chicks to sell as started birds, and have been very upfront with our kids, telling them that they are not our birds, but we are taking care of them for other families.
Nonetheless, my tenderhearted four year old fell in love with one, and despite our...
...if I have the chicken version of postpartum depression.
I think this may be the perfect way of putting what you are feeling. Few people want more kids the week after they give birth.
I would wait a while before making public proclamations writing off chicks, it could be temporary, or it...
I and trouble keeping my 3 year old and 7 year old (they share a room) in bed. They would just keep coming out for hours for one last thing. All the traditional punishments did not seem to make a difference, and I was frustrated.
One night they were up way past what was okay, so I grabbed the...
Like Alexis, I have always fed chick starter until they are laying or getting ready to lay. I have read from multiple books that around 8 weeks it is good to switch to grower (different from layer or chick), but I have never bothered.
Last week no gates, this week gates. I totally understand because every time I went in kids were picking up the chicks with minimal supervision from an adult. It made me nervous for the chicks sake. The TSC employee was nice and non-intrusive, and let me handle the chicks to see if I could...
I hate the way the city is trying to absorb the county islands. They have clearly stated that they do not plan on any improvements or other benefits, but there will be an increase in taxes. (I am in one of those islands.)
I was personally glad to see the article. I have had friends approach me...
This weekend the Fresno Bee ran a positive article on urban illegal hens.
Fresno urbanites connect to ag by keeping chickens
There was a lot of heated commenting on this article.
Does this mean that getting hens legalized is going to be an uphill battle, or is this normal?
I have heard you can increase the growth rate of pullets relative to their breed by feeding high protein feed, but not without a downside. I read that this early maturation can lead to problems throughout the hens reproductive life, like egg binding and prolapse.
Free ranging your birds and giving them dark leafy greens will increase the omegas in the eggs. Flaxseed works, but that seems expensive. Fishmeal in another way.
I had a chick like that. Chirped bloody murder until I picked it up. I finally figured out that it was cold (even all its brood-mates seemed fine). Once I lowered the heat lamp, the chick was fine.
Maybe this chick is having trouble in an area that the rest of the chicks have figured out.
I think free-ranging is awesome. It takes some pressure off the feed bill, and enriches the egg yolks. The chickens are even more entertaining with room for all their antics. The big downfall is if you have a garden or deck you are particularly fond of.

I am aware of some rare breeds, like the Ac chicken breeds that have dark skin, but you could really narrow down your suspects if you know (or tell us) what the hatchery is, and has to offer...
