here's a better pic of the rhode island red (thanks!!!) next to what I think it a OEGB boy. And, since you're being so helpful, my black bantam cochin pullet (please!!!)?
Yes, that black and white is a roo for sure. He was very white as a chick, but his black spots spread out. He's very roo- and I knew it from day 3. He's intense and has no fear.
I am worried about that black cochin next to the white/black roo. I'll see if I have a clearer pic of that one...
I know it does! It is the same chick for sure. I have noticed that sometimes she looks pale and other times almost yellow. Never as red as that brown one (I think he started crowing today) and the white and black one. Those are roos. One of the cochins might crow. That would be sad- we can...
Got this chick out of the assorted bantam bin at tractor supply. This isn't a great pic, but she's got the longest neck and this pic shows that. Her body is much more up-right than the others. We're hoping she's a pullet. She's just 7 weeks in this pic. Thanks!
Not much help, but I will say that I also had a case of wry neck (very scary thing to see!) and those same vitamins fixed her up in 2 days. She's been fine ever since. I kept up with the vits for maybe a week.
I have not posted on this site for a few years, though I relied on it heavily when I first started my chicken adventure. We've owned chickens for about 6 years now and have had our share of issues. But, yesterday, my vet and I preformed impacted crop surgery! I have to tell someone that will...
-We lost a bird last week. We free range in the afternoons and she didn't come home. Neighbors lost 2 cats- we assume coyote for all three. VERY limited free range since then. Came home today and let the chickens out to roam and one was trailing the pack and was clearly not right. She's in...
This started just a week ago- sneezing and open mouth breathing. She's a tiny bantam. I took her to my vet (he doesn't treat chickens, but consulted with an avain vet) and we got her on tylan for 3 days and baytril for 5. She's got 2 days of baytril left- she's done with the tylan.
Vet said...
Thanks, Sharon. Can you tell me exactly what you did? I'm going away over night tomorrow night. I've got a vet tech friend that is going to come over to care for her, but I want to do as much as I can for her today to give her an edge. She's a special hen, too. And, the only one that likes...
Thanks! The vet said that we could try steam if she gets more congested. He said to put her in the bathroom with a steamy shower (we've done this for sick kittens). I thought that I read somethig about vicks vapor rub on here?
You are my hero, btw, with that injured rooster. Talk about...
I posted the other day- I have a tiny bantam (I posted that she was 16 weeks, but she's actually 12) that started sneezing and open mouth breathing on Saturday. I started her on duramycin on Saturday as a precaution. It just seemed she wasn't right.
She's gotten worse... not eating as...
Thank you both- should I be giving her a dose? Or just treating the water?
She's worse today. I think that I saw a little mucus in her mouth (strings when she opened her mouth) and she's quieter. Still eating. I am now sure that she needs the antibiotics.
Talked to the vet and she said...
Sorry for confusing things and sorry if I have annoyed you with my panic.
Yes, the bird is sneezing- much more now. It's a quick sneeze that doesn't sound wet. No nasal or eye discharge. She sneezes several times in a minute.
She is open-mouth breathing on inhalation. She opens her...
Thanks everyone. I did OK on the dose- I did look it up beforehand, but there seems to be a million variables and a lot of room for error. I only mixed 2 cups, since I found the quart dose. She's a tiny, too.
Isn't this stuff meant to go into the free choice waterer? Since I gave some...
Update. And, UGH!
I went down to check on her and she was in her pullet pile with the other 2 young gals. I grabbed her and she immediately started open-mouth breathing. It's clearly associated with an inhalation, darn it. So, I guess we have upper respiratory infection.
I gave her some...
The shape of her beak looks fine. I just went out to see her (and stress out some more) and put her in the cage in the coop with her buddies that we've been using to introduce the 2 groups . She's eating for sure and I took another look down her throat and the throat of her buddy- they look...
Thanks in advance for any advice. I need to know- should I start to panic?
I have a flock of 6 chickens that are 20 weeks and a trio of 12-16 week olds that I just started to mix with the others about a week ago. They 2 groups were quarantined from each other (one inside and one outside) for...
I have to say that since my original post, my chickens DO like earwigs a bit more. I clear them out of the window track at night and several of the chickens run over to eat them- waiting for them to fall. Only 3 of the chickens have caught on that the banging noise means earwiggy snacks...
