I am moving to an area that has a huge open field. I want my chickens to free-range several times a week but am so afraid of hawks. Where I currently live has so many trees I never have had a problem with hawks. The field is too big to even think about covering with wire. Will scare crows help?
Update, I guess a little TLC goes a long way. My hen is standing up, when I open the door to the crate she tries to get out. She is eating very well, drinking water. I'm going to keep her in the house for a few more days. Yesterday she couldn't stand up, now she seems fine.
Wow, I just logged in to see if I could find anything about a chicken that can't stand. One of my newer hens has been sitting in a corner for several days. When I let the other chickens out I go in and make sure she has food. She could move around some but just a few feet at a time. At night...
Well, this makes me feel a little better, my Auracanas are 6 months old and no eggs yet. I have been afraid that the leghorns were eating them before I could get there. I have to race the leghorns to the brown eggs from the red stars. On days that I am at home, I check the nest constantly...
I often leave eggs out 2 or 3 days if I am out of town, can't tell a difference. Even when it is hot, my coop is in shade and isn't as hot as it would be out in the open. I also use the float test if in doubt. If my eggs turn up on the end but don't float to the top, they are ready to hard...
I have 3 white leghorns and 2 red star, the white chickens eat the brown eggs. I put oyster shells in their feed, give them yogurt and check the boxes constantly and still I haven't had a brown egg in weeks. I sometimes get there before they finish the shell, it is always the white chickens...
I'm looking for the same advice. I posted earlier injured chick bloody neck. I will watch your post to see what replies you get. My chicks neck is much worse, all the way around and further down the neck, but she seems Ok otherwise, she is eating a drinking. Mine is older also. I'm a little...
I have spent several days of slowly introducing my 10 week old chicks to my older hens. Today was the first day they were all together. Found one chick with her head stuck in fence wedged behind the small pen they had been in. I don't know if the injury to her neck is from being stuck in the...
I have recently hatched 6 recused eggs from a red jungle fowl, this is a breed of wild chicken, she was living wild in my yard and was killed by some critter during the night. The chicks are 9 days old and can already fly some. Enough to make it almost imposible to clean the cage they are in...
5 of the six did just fine, still waiting on #6, not even pipped yet. this egg was iffy to begin with. these eggs were "rescued" the mother hen was killed half way through incubation, I ran out and bought an incubator, knowing nothing! I got 5 eggs in within hours of mother being killed...
This is my first hatching.. I have 6 eggs in incubator, 1 chick is out (OMG it is cute), but it is moving around and causing the other eggs to roll. Will this be a problem if they end up upside down. 3 more have pipped (?) one of these is close
In am new to this and also watching, mine are rescued eggs from a wild hen (Red Jungle Fowl) she was killed last Sat night. Since I don't know exactly when she started setting, I don't know exactly when to expect them to hatch. I don't even know if they are OK, I checked on her at dusk Fri she...
My ladies mostly lay in the nesting boxes but I sometimes find an egg on the floor. The eggs are never broken, do you think the eggs fall out of the nesting box? The eggs are near enough to have fallen. I have 5 hens and 4 nesting boxes, but they usually lay in the same one.
Thanks for the quick replies, yes I have a rooster. Actually, these are wild chickens that we caught. My hometown, Fitzgerald Ga is over run with wild chickens, they are supposed to be Burmese Jungle fowl. I brought them back to Watkinsville to mix with my domestic chickens. I kept them...
