Well, I figured it out. She is a Cochin, but she is very determined to be broody AGAIN. She became broody DURING her chick raising period, so she’s just a crazy brood…
Well, I’m intrigued too because all seems well again, she’s calling them to eat but when they come out from under her she pecks them but she’s they’re far too big to go under her…
Hi! Sorry if this is co fusing I’m rushing. So, we gave our broody Cochin some Easter egg we chicks about 2 or 3 weeks ago, now they are going to bed but she keeps pecking them and pulling out feathers and has no intention of sitting on them anymore, she I guarding her food ect. She is acting...
She did great! I put her in a cooler with blankets so it was dark and comfortable so she would feel safe. I then moved her in my bedroom in a brooder box in a milk crate with a cut out entrance. She hatched her chicks but attacked them so we had to raise them ourselves. She’s just started...
If I were you, put them in (a) dog crate(s) and throw blankets on top to make it dark. Make sure your legal, then move them. Keep them in the new coop for 3-5 days, or longer if needed. Put mirrors, hang cabbage, make them happy, put a bowl with sand and make a dust bathe. Try to make them as...
I had air cells like that, surprisingly chicks did still hatch I just left them to do what eggs do. I really only worry at day 10 candling and then hatch days, but seeing its an incubator, candle again on day 14 and see if anything smells or no movement. If they move keep them, if they smell...
Dr. Naylor Blu-Kote Aerosol, 5 oz.$5.99Tractor Supply Company(93)For most items:30-day return policy A must for hiding injuries from other hens. If a hen has a bloody wound the other hens will peck it, spray this on it and you shouldn't have to worry about pecking, healing, and infections!!
If you don't mind me asking why is that, are they dual purpose breeds? I don't mean to be questioning your hen raising, but wouldn't it be cheaper to just get chicks every few years rather than getting a new flock every 10 months?
Let them do their thing don't take them out until every egg has hatched, or thrown out from being a bad egg, don't put them in a brooder until you think they've all hatch and are all ready to go. Make sure they have a heat lamp in the brooder and they stay nice and cozy (not too hot) :)
Bigger is always better, I live in PA as well, free range in the middle of the woods. 10x10 coop and have 23 hens and 5 bantams and 1 banty rooster. We had issues with predators but once we got a male dog he pees on everything (outside dog) and scares predator away. Keep in mind the run needs...
Make sure to be very careful, the egg could be a bit soft depending on how long its been in there. If it cracks, your going to need to get a pair of gloves, some sort of lubricant and get all the eggs. pieces out without cutting the insides of her. Best of luck!
