Official BYC Poll - How Many Square Feet Per Chicken?

I have 12 chickens: 2 square ft per chicken in the coop 5+ square ft per chicken in the run that encloses the coop, which they have free access to at all times (it does not get cold enough here to need to close the pop door at night). 1/2 acre for free range during the day

Interesting breed/color of white egg layer?

The Exchequer Leghorns have also caught my eye. I have Brabanters which I love. Similar crests can be found on the Appenzeller Spitzhauben. Another breed I would like to try is the Norwegian Jaerhon- they're not as flashy, but something about their appearance appeals to me.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Quote: Surprisingly, after signing up for them to notify me, I got a call this morning telling me they should have some on May 25 as well. I wasn't expecting to hear back that fast; it was a pleasant surprise. I asked for 7 pullets and a roo (I probably should have asked for a couple roos in...

I agree that the incubator is more reliable for hatching, but I love watching my broody with her babies. It's amazing to think that we kept the chicks in a box in the garage for weeks and she has them running all over the yard at just a few days old. It's so cool to hear the chicks & mama...

Blaundee is correct that only 2 eggs hatched. Unfortunately one of the chicks was dead yesterday morning. There was no sign of trauma or pecking, but it was outside the crate so I don't know if it possibly got out in the middle of the night & got too cold. I went to the feedstore & got 3 barred...

There were 2 adorable balls of fluff when I came home today. One snuck out from under mama briefly & I got a pic. There are 5 other eggs under her- one of which may have a pip. We'll see if there are any more babies tomorrow.

My broody got on the wrong nest

One of the eggs had pipped this afternoon, & it is only day 20, so I guess they didn't get too cold. I'll post another update once I know how many actually hatch.

There was a pip in one of the fertile eggs I got from Blaundee this afternoon- & it is only day 20! I was worried because the broody got back on the wrong nest one day last week. New chicks for Mother's Day. I can't wait for tomorrow.

My broody is still sitting on blaundee's eggs. It will be 21 days on Monday! She had a little nest confusion a few days ago, so I hope the eggs are OK. I guess only time will tell. dak, I would definitely be interested in buying buff laced brahma eggs or chicks sometime in the future if you...

My broody got on the wrong nest

Mine is not the brightest bulb in the bunch. And she was low in the pecking order before she went broody. I hope if the chicks hatch she'll be able to take care of them. Although she has done a pretty good job of defending her nest box.

My broody got on the wrong nest

Quote: Ok, I want to make sure I understand. She was broody for 7 days before you put fertile eggs under her 14 days ago? correct. I don't have a rooster, so the eggs my hens lay aren't fertile. She's been sitting for a little over 3 weeks now, but it took me a little while to decide she was...

My broody got on the wrong nest

I've never candled eggs. Will I see movement? Mine is a Brabanter (that's her in my profile pic as a baby). She's not even a year old, but seems to be a determined broody. She was sitting for a week before I got the fertile eggs & has been on them for 2 weeks. She was not really "off the nest,"...

My broody got on the wrong nest

When I came home today, my broody was on the wrong nest. The fertile eggs weren't cold, but they weren't really warm either. I moved her back to the correct box & collected today's fresh eggs to prevent any more confusion tonight. She's been sitting for 2 weeks now. Is there anything I can do to...

Busted! Hubby just came in & told me "you should go check because it looks like that broody girl is sitting on a bunch of eggs." I guess I could have played dumb, but I went ahead & admitted that I put them under her. The next questions was "where did you get them?" I said "from someone I met on...

I'm trying to decide how & when to tell my husband I put fertile eggs under the broody He's afraid to disturb her, so he won't notice unless he happens to check for eggs when she's off the nest. Of course, it will be hard to hide baby chicks... The biggest problem is that those baby chicks are...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I knew I wasn't getting enough white eggs the past few days, even taking into account 1 broody Brabanter. I found a cache of 5 eggs waaaaaay up in the blackberry bush where the rabbits live. They were all good (it hasn't been too warm here), but I cracked 3 in the process of getting them out:

My broody is still sitting on Blaundee's eggs. I was able to check them while she was off the nest for her daily constitutional yesterday. It looked like another egg had been broken/eaten in the nest (I have 1 hen who is laying very thin-shelled eggs right now) but all 10 of the fertile eggs...

For Ideal, it's $25 of chicks not including shipping. If you're ordering sexed hens, it's less than 10. The other nice thing is that there is no minimum number of any breed (there is a small surcharge for <5 of a breed, but you can order just 1 if you want). Their shipping was pretty cheap &...
