I'm not sure about weight, (ETA my husband said she didn't feel lighter than normal when he picked her up) we had a problem with our auto coop door, and then a problem with rodents. so just recently we had a bit of a rough go transitioning the 3 girls to the rodent proof granny feeder. I thought...
my 3 year old buff orpington I noticed today had a pale wattle, my kids have been sick for a week, I only saw her from the window and thought I'd go check on her tomorrow.
my husband just found her in the run, not in the coop, unable to stand laying to the side with one wing stuck out. At...
Thanks everyone! Her neck feathers are coming back in and she's laid 2 eggs this week! So hopefully she's coming through this just fine. I read to keep them calm but I was like, what? I don't read them the news or anything so they're probably fine as is. Haha
Yes, Chopper isn't bare anywhere. But there was a huge pile of feathers the other day then today I noticed only one tail feather is left! Plus the comb color was concerning to me. I hadn't read about that when I learned about molting. You learn something new all the time.
Ok good to know. I didn't expect them to molt until next year, don't see any other signs of illness so I told my husband, well I don't know maybe she's dying?? 🐔🤔🐥
Obviously as a half joke but it's also a chicken reality we were prepared for but haven't experienced luckily.
This is her 4 months ago... Watching them now and only my Easter egger is getting a little bit picked on, but I think she's bottom on the pecking order.
She seems redder in this previous picture
In contrast both my black australorp and buff orpington combs are really big and red. I know she was laying because I regularly had 3 brown eggs a day, now I have max 2 brown eggs. And I haven't seen her in the next box for a while but can't remember if I've seen any of her feathers their recently.
Could my nine month old barred rock be molting? I don't think she's laying anymore, 80 percent of her tail feathers are gone (I've seen nor heard any fighting but have seen a huge amount of her feathers on the ground) and yesterday and today I've noticed that her comb has really turned pale...
38 weeks old and my Easter egger finally laid an egg!!! I just about fell over when bowed to me last week out of nowhere. A few days later I discovered her digging up the hay in the nest box. Now in the last 5 days she's laid 3 eggs! Guess we'll keep her 🐔😂
Thanks! They don't know how to use it, we tried and failed to teach them before and then we were building a fence so had to keep them in their run for a while, which is too small for the feeder. I'll start again as soon as I clean it out. It got all moldy!
We don't bring the water in at night. Their coop is only a sleep area sized for 4 chickens their size, so food and water are in their run. We have been taking the food up at night.
Was thinking snap traps nailed to wood, baited with chicken feed, under a milk crate at night (in case of skunks...
So we are introducing the Grandpa's feeder to our chickens. We have the standard size. Currently they have a feeder bowl that we take up at night. However we definitely have a rat. We've disturbed it at night a few times when we've come down and I interrupted her one day moving her nest of...
She's 34 weeks now I think, possibly older.
Just found her sitting halfway in the nest box. Head in, butt on the coop floor.
She's officially messing with me.
She's 12 weeks behind my other chickens! I found a feather from her in the nesting box last week, but still nothing. 🤔🤷
My husband told me he's eating her if she doesn't lay by April 🤣
Well here we are 2+ months later and my ee still isn't laying! I'd say maybe she's laying brown eggs, but I've never ever had 4 eggs in one day so there's no way she's laying. My husband is getting sick of her free loading, haha
Hey I had a thought, was trying to figure out how to add light to my coop that was on auto and battery operated. I found Christmas twinkle lights! They are just on auto on for 5 hours a day. Turn them on at 5am and you're set for I think a month then change the batteries. I have this as a back...
20 days after I saw my first pullet squat, 2 weeks of laying eggs from 3 of my four hens, and finally my Easter egger did a half squat before continuing to run away from me! I think the 3 girls have laid about 30 eggs and I've even gotten 3 extra large ones! Those were a shock to see. They are...
