Its the colours, pattern and the comb/crown the starcomb. normal appenzellers are a lot whiter there are darker breeds but they dont have the same consistencey.
Is it a recesisve gene? it seems that all 5 of these new ones have it so hopefully it should maintain but I guess we will find out. what makes it difficult to breed true?
So needs to have substantial differences not just colour. I assume pattern is one substantial diffference but it depends. so it is very hard to "create" a new breed.
I already have them isolated and am waiting for them to start laying. I will seperate the ones with the less desireable traits and breed them until I can reliabley get the patterns, colour and shape.
I went down to feed the chickens this morning and had a better look at them and found that only 2 of the chickens have the love heart shaped feathers the rest are similiar to wyandottes but not as neat as wyandotte markings. The major new thing I found out was they have a semi split crown. Which...
I have 2 appenzellers as of right now, they do enjoy getting out a lot more and are very flighty birds. They are one of my more recent additions to my main flock and I think they are very nice birds. They are doing well in the cold. Hopefully I can make something out of these new chickens.
Im hoping that they will lay well due to being from good laying chickens and I dont know what colour the eggs will be. What is cold hardy? I have had a week of -5 degrees c and they are doing perfectly fine but thats the lowest I can get it in England.
How does one make a new colour of spitzhaben? would it just be breeding it with different coloured spitzhaubens? Ill see what happens when I breed these ones together.
Shame, what is considered a new breed? Would it be from a mutation in one of the genes to make it significantly different. Rather than a mixed breed like what I have.
I haven’t had any eggs from them yet but am expecting them soon. I would expect frequency to be similar to that of black rocks and appenzellers which is high ish.
I have had a look over the internet to try and find a chicken same shape and same colour pattern but have found it very hard, I bred these chickens from 2 other breeds. If anyone can find a breed that is the same please do tell me. I hope that it is something different. I breed these by...
Hello I am new to this group and am living in the United Kingdom and was wondering if anybody either knew of someone in the U.K that has ODs if not what do you think of the idea of sending lots of eggs over on an airplane. I have a brinsea OvaEasy 100 Advance EX Series II Incubator and was...
I am in the UK as well did you manage to get the medicine in to them in time or not?
Sorry that so many have died I think that this maybe something to do with the breeder you ordered it from. How are the ones in the incubator?
Archie
Are they trying to get as far away from the heat lamp as possible if so the heat lamb may be too hot so move it away and that may help. I dont know enough about ducks but that is something I recognize from hatching chickens myself.
I am also doing the same as you but with lots of quails. I think it might help if you sent a photo of the chicks "bloody red protrusion" I think this would help for us to get a better view of it.
I have hatched three Buff Orpingtons a couple of years ago and they are absolutely adorable but I think that it shouldn't affect it it just looks a healthier color and may be a different color variation from a different mother. But I dont think anything to worry about.
