South Buckinghamshire UK - 1 rooster + 10 hens need of rehoming

Sadly, the time has come to make serious decisions about letting our chickens go. Change in work commitments force my hand as I will not be able to take care of them... Have been stalling for a couple of months, but need to get it done. They currently live in a custom-built coop which is not...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Agree 100% The polish is a full sized brahma with the polish charm and personality 😘 From the chicks, the white one with a black mark on his head turned out to be a rooster identical to this black one but white with black wingtips and a line of black on the back of his head. Looked super cute...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Hi @Allsfairinloveandbugs chicks are amazing. They have grown up super fast and are thriving with their parents. Ended up with 4 roosters and the rest hens. Decided to keep two brown (pure brahmas), two black and two ginger hens. The two white chicks from hatching are the ginger ones now...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Thank you so much for your kind words. She's a dedicated mama and the chicks are adorable. It's midnight here and just watching them sleep. They are spilling out from all sides from under her 😊 The older chickens we have are all hatched here or been with us since they were a day or two...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Final update: The chicks are doing really well, growing so fast, full of energy, and just being cool chicks. Mama hen is an amazing mama, attentive, protective, and gracious. Every day she takes them out for long walks around the garden, finding food, and giving it to the chicks showing them...

How to get chick to take meds?

Yeh I always put whatever I'm giving on the tip (front) of their tongue and let them swallow on their own. Gets them used to the taste too. Mine love the flavour of grapes and since grape juice is always in the house, that mixed with the right amount of meds, always goes down well.

How to get chick to take meds?

Yep I know what you mean. It sounds a bit odd but hold its head with your index and thumb on either side of its head. Make sure the back of its head is right the way back where your thumb and index finger join. That will give you the tips of your thumb and index finger to hold its beak open...

How to get chick to take meds?

Had this issue also. Watch this video: I do exactly that but being seated, you can hold the bird under your left arm (if you're right-handed) and then hold its beak open with my left and give meds with the right hand. Make sure you're putting the med with a syringe on the tip of its tongue...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Quick update: From the incubator where 4 eggs remained, around 6pm yesterday one hatched with a further two eggs pipped. At around midnight I tucked that one under the hen and she didn't mind. Early hours of this morning, the other two hatched. I let them stay in the incubator for around 9...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

it's labeled as a "surface" spray so will need to dilute, but don't know by how much. Need to do more reading. By the way, would using Ivermectin and Permethrin together on the birds be overkill or acceptable? Eggs would be binned for the duration of the treatment. Ordered the Permethrin as...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Thanks... read somewhere it's 1 drop of the 1% for a 500g bird...my Brahma roo is 6kg so 12 for him and the little chicks will be way south of 50g so 1 drop at 0.05% should be ok to start with.

I plan on using USP grade PG (Propylene Glycol) to dilute it. I have a gallon of it here as it's also used for making vape juice. Would that be ok? Link is the exact one I already have.

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Got my hands on some Ivermectin Drops 1% which I should have had from the start. Will dilute it down for the chicks but looking forward to putting it to use. Mama hen has been amazing since she got her chicks back. She spent a long time teaching them different things, mainly foraging, but took...

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

Put an order in for Perbio Choc. Contains 0.64% Permethrin and 0.63% Tetramethrin. That should be ok right? Hope it does the trick.

Should I take the hatched chick from the broody hen? Staggered hatch

This has also been a major concern and just now I had to switch out the eggs for the chicks as she had come off the eggs completely. She was stood like this for more than 20 minutes from the point I saw her. Eggs had cooled down, which itself could be an issue but they are in the incubator...
