    Rooster Collar Not Consistent

Hi all, Spoiler alert, not interested in people's opinions regarding the ethics of collars. This post is hopefully to troubleshoot a sporadically effective collar, which if can't be resolved will result in said rooster being et! We have opted for a DIY collar, 1" wide velcro job, started it...

    G'Day from Tasmania!

Hi Drumstick, Where'd you move from? The poultry supply shop in Margate is pretty comprehensive, and normally have POL hens for sale, pribably be my first stop. Gumtree abounds otherwise, always a deal to be had, mostly cowvoys though, so if you're after vax certs etc don't hold your breath

    *****To all you newbies!!!*****

Haha, yes, in Australia, MAINLAND, but not in Tasmania. we do have Quolls here, but we are far enough away from bushland that they won't come in. Possums could be a threat for younger chicks I assume, but figure they're nocturnal.

Question from the antipodes here. Can someone explain to me why you call it hardware cloth?? Seems anything like cloth to me. 😄 Bit like how you call petroleum 'gas' and artificial grass turf. Lol. Looks like what we call aviary mesh down under... Gal steel construcrion. 1.2mm gauge. welded...

Comment by 'BornFelder' in article 'Who is Laying.....and Who is Not? Butt Check!'

Nice article AArlt, very informative. I was wondering the same as feathermaid, will the pelvic bone test apply to hens who have laid previously? Or is it case of once spread, stays spread.

    Barnvelde Going AWOL... Broody Chook?

Thanks for the prompt reply there. Interesting development today with my Barnvelde. I caught her in the neighbours yard yesterday and then shut her up in the coop, intending to do the same today except she managed to get out before I could close the door on her - cheeky thing. Went out to play...

Thanks for the quick reply. So you would suggest my squatting hens are not layers yet, but imminent layers?

    G'Day from Tasmania!

Hi there, We're brand new to the chicken thing. We started the summer with 9 day old chicks, lost 5 to a predator (long story -- learning curve), leaving 4 surviving POL pullets (2xAustralorp, 2xAracauna), and have added 4 supposedly laying hens (2xISA Brown, 2xBarnvelde). It's been a steep...

    Chicken Squat

Hi all, I am curious about this chicken squat thing. I have read about it on various forums, and have witnessed it first hand amongst my flock in one of my ISA Browns and One of my Australorps. Everywhere I have read about it suggest it is demonstrated by Pullets that are at POL and that egg...

    Barnvelde Going AWOL... Broody Chook?

New hand to the chicken thing, so much to learn, loving it! We have a mixed flock in Hobart, Tasmania, including 2 18 month ISA browns, 2 POL Austrlalorps, 2 POL Aracauna. More recently we picked up 2x 18 month old Barnvelds from a friend of a friend, a few months ago. We were told they had...
