They are all enclosed in a coop for night shelter. The entire flock roosts on 2x4’s except 1 younger adult silkie who occupies one of the nesting boxes at night. The mother hen and her chicks have been occupying another nesting box, but there is plenty of floor space should they choose to move...
Hello. I’m not sure if all the particulars in our situation have been covered so I’m going to lay them all out.
We have 11 hens and 1 rooster in our flock and 1 of the hens became broody, sat on eggs and hatched 5 chicks on 10/21. The chicks are now 2 weeks old and thriving. We have left them...
Hello!
I recently added 4 hens and 1 rooster to an existing flock of 7 hens. I left them in a dog crate for a day inside the run and put them in the coop at night. The next morning they were free to roam the run with the older hens and at dusk, we watched to see if they’d return to the coop...
Upon further review as they’ve now are opened to the run, all hens of this breed appear to be acting normal. Of course, showing signs of being cold, tucking head/raising feet to their bodies, but otherwise actively foraging. Frankly, its hard to determine which one was lethargic yesterday...
I have a light that comes on at 4am in the coop, so I went down to check the status and noticed the hen seemed more active. Hard to tell how active as they are confined within the coop. I will have a better update once the sunrises and the door opens for the run. Her tail was laying normal like...
@Eggcessive thank you for the tips. I will be out there first thing in the morning to reevaluate/take photos if necessary. Funny you should mention the egg part, she did lay an egg later then the rest of the hens a few hours before I noticed the lethargy. She is a very sporadic layer it seems...
Also, forgot to mention the hen is 11 months old and is always the outcast in the flock. Generally skittish and is the only bird I have who does not enjoy mealworms. Not sure if that matters, but worth mentioning
I took a visit down to the run an hour before sunset where the flock has been kept without free ranging for a few days after a loss to a predictor last week. To set the picture of this evening, the temperature was in the 20’s and winds were sustained 15-20 with gusts up to 30, setting the wind...
A weird egg showed up in the nest box this afternoon. It was soft to the squeeze, but yet still kind of fine sandpaper like on the outside. It also looked like it wasn’t formed into a circle and frankly, looked like an organ of some sort. When we cut it open it was a normal egg yolk inside just...
New to chicken raising, in June I purchased what were sold as two ameraucana pullets from a May hatch aged approximately 6 weeks. Now they are about 16 weeks, I assume. Clearly at least one of these is an Easter egger. There are clear differences in tail feathers and feather color/pattern...
Now that is hilarious. I am going to wake up abruptly thinking about coons looking at me 👀 lol
When I trapped my first squirrel last winter in the attic, I was lost on how to handle it as well. Not to mention, squirrels are not all fluffy and friendly when they are trapped. I muscled my way...
I grew up in Baltimore where rats were everywhere. We used to hunt them with paintball guns and each kid would have a different color paint so we all knew who shot which one for weeks later.
I would’ve paid just to be a fly on the wall for this dramatic catch and uncertainty with how to handle...
@Scott204 I hear that, I work midnights myself. My tracking number updated today and shows delivery tomorrow so I guess for those who read this later and may be in the same predicament, my door took 1 day shy of 6 weeks to arrive.
@sloanbychoice well at this point I will take any advice I can get. This is all brand new to me so thank you. And I can really see the welcoming atmosphere of this forum and it seems like no questions are dumb questions.
