    First eggs

My chicks from my daughter's kindy hatch at 15 weeks on Wednesday and two of them have just laid their first eggs. I was not expecting that! One egg in the run and one in the nest box. Now I have just bought and opened them a new bag of grower pellets, there are 7 chicks total so five yet to...

    My chicks need their blanket...

Below is a picture of the wool hen, not a good one. It's a styrofoam box with plastic wrap and strips of fleece hung from ceiling. Under it was a (reptile) heat plate that I turned off yesterday. Temp wise it's down to 15degrees Celcius at night. In the box it heats up over 30s when they in...

My 3.5 week chicks are in their brooder with wire top, no heat just a wool hen and outside. When it gets to night time they start to chirp, some go to the wool hen most sit on top of the wool hen and chirp. I have blanket thay I put on the brooder when they were young to help with heat, when I...

    4.5 week golden comets

I am curious, the brooder does not have roof and that side lattice they can surely jump over. Do they stay in the brooder?

Aren't they just the things to keep you confused. 5 have taken to sleeping on top of the huddle box (out in open) and 2 sleep in the box. The last two nights I moved the 5 to the huddle box and they sleep fine in there without issue. Tonight I decided to leave them on top... Is that the right...

    Baby chick bleeding

That is interesting... I'll try that. They really don't like being separated, quite noisy when not with the others

    Baby chick bleeding

I have put her and one other in a box and watching for any pecking. I don't have a red light and don't have another proper box/brooder. Should be separated until there is no visible redness? is that a couple of days sort of thing? Thanks again, this is first time with babies an only had pair...

    Baby chick bleeding

What should I do, she has bleeding either side of her face and I have seen one other chick peck at it? I tried to separate but she just cries and wants to go back with the others. She is in there now.

Thanks for that, no momma here though and they are working off of instinct (truly amazing how that works). I should say I am in Australia and its hitting winter now and they are fully outside.

    Wool hen space required

Well these chicks are just funny....or perhaps I know nothing about baby chicks which is entirely possible. I built a platform same height as the huddle box, placed the wool hen strips in the huddle box and put it on the platform. They go in sometimes during the day but are spending more time...

    Party hat brooder fix

Cool idea, adds color too... I might have to try as mine are also jumping on top of the feeder, water and anything up high they can get too. How old are your chicks? What are the upgrades you talk of....

    Wool hen space required

I don't know what breed as they came from my youngest kindy as part of a chicken hatch program. I suspect hyLine or Isa Brown. While the brooder may have enough space, it seems small now, I don't know how big to make the wool hen box for all 7 of them at 6 weeks. Thanks again.

    Wool hen space required

Hi all... I have 7 chicks just hitting 2weeks, I have provided then with a heated styrofoam box (wrapped in contact plastic) and a form of a wool hen made of strips of linen hanging from a wire scaffolding. The heated box is heated from the floor by a reptile heat mat. I have temp sensors...
