Is it possible to get two chicks in one egg? One of my broodies was sitting on 6 eggs and now there are 3 baby chicks running around... and FOUR eggs still remaining! I can't think of anything else except that one of the eggs had two little chickies in there!

Hehe, yeah sorry not to mention that my chickens live in my backyard which is very muddy during rainy season. So the brown/red on their back and necks is actually just mud stains from when the roos do their thing.

That's stinks!
I will be waiting.
Yeah, it's been rainy for the past few days... YUCK! But now it's a beautiful morning, so we should be able to take a few snapshots!
Coming soon!
Thanks all for helping me out!
I will be uploading more photos later, but today was a real ugly, rainy day so I didn't get to take any new pics. We have at least three new hatches and five more possible within the next few days. All the chicks are black, with what looks to be another Turken.

Thanks cthrash1. I have been leaning that way too... that the roo is an Australorp. But my roo has yellow legs, not black. Not to mention his eyes aren't black, but closer to yellow-orange.
Maybe he is an Australorp mix? Can't think of anything else. Many of our chicks look like...
Thanks ascorbic. I'll be uploading better pictures sometime soon of the rest of the flock (and some new additions!).
I had suspicions about the new hampshire red and the turken, but I hadn't looked at the Wellsumer before. Interesting! I think she may be a bit older than the others, so I...
Congratulations to everyone who's had success in June so far!
I forgot to note which day I put 6 eggs under a broody we call Goldie Lox. I was expecting this weekend but I must have been wrong! I saw two little heads peaking from under her this afternoon!
Goldie Lox was also the first ever...
Here's two more I'm curious about. This one is named is Cleopatra:
And two of our favorites, Redneck and Big Momma (below):
Big momma is molting (as are a bunch others right now!) as you can probably tell.
I've had most of these birds for about eight months now. I adopted them when my neighbor left, and since then I've begun to add to the flock. But I still don't know jack about breeds. I've looked at the excellent breed resource pages here, but I still have some doubts as to what my birdies are...
I forgot to mention that I live in Mexico right now. I'm not sure if the breeds are different or what. My guess is that all of my chickens are "mutts" or mixes of sorts. I hope to upload some photos so that perhaps some more trained eyes can help me identify some of the birds.
I didn't start...
My personal experience is that they can molt while brooding, but one doesn't necessarily mean the other. I've had three hens hatch eggs and only one went through a true molt while caring for her little ones. I must admit, though, that the other two hens did look better after their brooding was...
Thanks for setting my advice straight, cybercat. Why would the locals think 1 to 20 is a good ratio?
I wouldn't call myself a "breeder" but I've successfully hatched and kept alive 17 chicks from 24 eggs (and that includes my learning curve early on). Most of the time I had 4 roosters to my 15...
I've heard from local farmers here that only one rooster is needed for every 20 hens. But I've also read people who have had a slightly higher ratio with no problems. I had four roosters for 15 hens and that was very hard on the hens. Now I have two with a growing hen population and things are...
This forum has been very helpful to me throughout the past six months as I've learned tremendously about how to maintain chickens. Though I have always loved free-range hen eggs, I never thought I would ever have my own birds. They sort of dropped on my lap when a neighbor bought a bunch (9) and...
