What is the purpose of a duck's mucous membrane?

Hello, I have been reading up a lot on ducks. I am planning to pick up 8 after my coop is finished. All the articles say that the ducks need to have a waterer deep enough to submerge their head and keep their mucous membrane moist. Where is the membrane and what is its purpose? Thank you, TbChiCken

Husqvarna is the best, I considered getting the Stihl MS 271 Farm Boss, but I got the Husqvarna 450 Rancher off Amazon, renewed, for a better price. The saw works like a horse when it has a full tank of gas, bar and chain oil, and is correctly tensioned.

Are raw oak logs safe to use in a chicken coop?

I accidentally misidentified the kind of wood that am using. It turns out that it is maple instead of oak. Is it safe to use with chickens? I am working on the build thread.

Are raw oak logs safe to use in a chicken coop?

It is going well, it is surprisingly dry. Should I create a build thread in Coop & Run: Design, Construction, Maintenance?
