I want to pose a question to a specific demographics such as this group...
Move it - delete it ? Here goes.
I've spent my life around some form of animal husbandry and question the following:
Do you think chickens (hens) are happier when they have similar varieties to interact with? As a...
I think this is a wonderful thread! Since the beginning of time when humans were hunter and gathers or nomads, we have all had a need to belong to something greater than ourselves. That's the purpose of this thread- to belong to a like minded group for fellowship, strength, support and most of...
Hi,
In my experience with raising 4 chicks I found small branches worked best as the bark was ruff enough for them to get better footing. It was cost effective to toss them when I needed to up size them to the next larger branch.
In my coop I use 1x4's and the bottom roost is a 1x6 as they...
Stop that !!!! I
I will admit that I am going to fence a second free range yard so I can let the soil rest and possibly grow a blade of grass in the original free range yard.
This morning I was having my morning coffee with the girls and a darn wild turkey hen flew in for some free...
Thanks to one chicken (Carlotta Cluck) who moved in from my neighbors coop last June I now have 14 wretched chickens.. I've become the United Nations of chicken rescue. Give me your spent, plucked, broody old hen who hates people... To old and tuff to eat I might add.. GRRRR
What do you end...
Greetings:
I want to share a little experience I have had with my chicken ventures.
This started with my neighbors Leg horn that put in a change of address and would not stay home. So I was forced to go get her 6 hens for friends as I didn't need a adopted chicken with social separation...
I have to be fair. They were adults when I got them. I should withhold judgement until I raise a couple from youngsters (Bard Rock's). Everything I have read says RiR's like to be flock dominate..
I've decided on 4 Red stars, going to pick them up this weekend. 8 weeks old! This should be fun!
Looking at some RIR & red sex link pullets. They also have some americana & golden cochin mixes .
So if RIR are one of the breeds used to make sex link varieties and sex links can't reproduce themselves, how would these egg production hens (sex link) babies be at egg production as adult hens...
I want to thank all those who offered input.
I made my decision...... Drum roll........
I declined to take them in and sited all the very valid reasons that everyone offered up to me.
Ya know, sometimes we get caught up in emotion and forget logic... Guilty as charged here.
Through the years...
Greetings,
News sure travels fast. I have 8 hens. All of them have been chickens in need of a home (coop). Most are spent and we enjoy just having them as pets. If we get gifted with a egg, well that's great! If not, I'm still gonna bring you some treats and just enjoy you...
I have a post...
what about top rail for chain-link fencing? It's light weight and you can add to a piece to make it any length you want? You could use electric fence wire to lash the hardware cloth to it?
I ended up using 16ft. pan roofing metal to cover part of mine. Best wishes to you! Wells
I feel ya, my two bard rocks have zip- zero personality. They act like I beat them daily and dip them in hot wax.... Yet, they have no problem snatching goodies out of my hand. No more bard rocks here unless they are in a recipe...lol
