We've had birds for a number of years but we're recently wiped out by a mink and a fox. I just discovered that our one remaining hen, Foxy, has been putting up with a horrible red mite infestation. We've had dry, warm weather recently and she was staying with a friend's hens, which is where she...
Hi all, I accidentally bought Ivomec injectable liquid instead of the pour on, which is what I normally use. Already opened the box so I can't return it. Can I still use it and if so how - method, dosage? Thanks!
I recently acquired a young bantam rooster - I think he's about 9 months old. He's only just started crowing and filling out to what I assume will be his full size (I'm new to bantams). He's 1 of 7 and the rest of the flock is standard sized hens, a variety of ages and breeds. Right now he's at...
Hi folks, I recently acquired a pair of bantams at a local poultry show. I've kept them separate from the other hens to keep an eye on them and make sure they're disease free. Thank goodness I did because it turns out they have a worm infection. My question is how old should birds be before...
Well, he's almost completely back to normal AGAIN! I'm going to experiment a little and continue to give him supplements... Watch this space and thanks so much for all of the information.
Thanks so much for all of the advice and information - much appreciated.
I'm a little confused about the vaccination. Is it not effective past a certain point? I thought the rooster was over a year but after speaking to his original owner, he's about a year old now. I realise age isn't...
I'm wondering if my guy rallies for a third time and returns to normal could I give him anti-viral supplements to prevent another relapse? I'm thinking of things like lysine, lemon balm, zinc, garlic - or is Merek's a death sentence, period (you can see that I'm still happily living in denial)...
Can I just ask if Marek's makes the comb turn purple? He's still hanging in there and I think the fact that he seems so bright and perky is making it hard for me to do the deed (and I'm a big ol wimp). I guess I just want to be sure it's not a vitamin deficiency because I was giving him...
Thanks for your diagnosis - I'm really depressed now! It's funny because I actually care a lot more about him since I've been nursing him off and on. I didn't think he had Mareks because he's that bit older and he kept getting better, but reading through the descriptions again it does seem to...
Yeah it's very strange and starting to get very frustrating. He's completely unable to walk again since yesterday afternoon and I reckon he'll be like this now until middle of next week if the pattern is the same. His comb was also quite purple this morning but now it's back to red. One thing...
My girls had exactly this a while back and it turned out to be lice. It took many inspections before I actually started to see lice and by then the infestation was pretty intense - I felt really bad about it but it was pretty easy to clear up with a little persistence. Hope your gals get better!
The 2 times he's gone through this(both times lasting about a week) he made complete recoveries and seemed normal and healthy. No sneezing, wheezing or inflamed or oozing nasal passages or ears. His eyes are clear too. He does seem to retract his neck into his body when it happens and like I...
It starts off with him stumbling to the left and backwards and not being able to walk straight. It progresses to the point where he falls over and then can't get up at all and can't use his legs. But he can still hold his head up just fine and eat food if it's held in front of him
He is free...
hi, my year and a half old roo started having problems walking about 6 weeks ago - falling over, looking 'drunk' when he walked, not being able to get up. He was eating/drinking fine with help, poo was a little runny for a while and quite green at times, but otherwise he had no other symptoms...
It's day 4 since the ivomec was given to the roo and day 3 of his symptoms - he's stll hanging in there and eating but no change in his ability to walk. An awful question but I'm wondering how long to keep him going until I should consider the 'alternative'? There seems to be mixed info on...
I recently treated my hens and 1 yr old rooster for worms with topical ivomec (3-4drops for the hens and 5 for the rooster as he's a bit bigger). Within 24 hrs we noticed the rooster was having difficulty walking and he fell over a couple of times and wasn't able to get back up on his own. By...
I had a similar experience this summer when my hen was attacked by (I think) a feral cat who managed to pull off all of the skin on her back along with much of the muscle. She had puncture wounds about 1/2 an inch deep in some parts of her neck and back and she was missing huge chunks - it's...
2 chucks were attacked on saturday afternoon, mid-day, possibly by a cat or a mink? One is seriously wounded on her back with torn skin and some exposed muscle, on about the size of a half dollar and two others about the size of a quarter. I've cleaned and packed the wounds which smell awful but...
