What is this? I just got 5 chickens that were said to be Bovans Brown. From far off I thought they were mounting. after inspection I find what is pictured below. If you zoom in you can see they are broken off and one has blood. Their necks are also like this. They were brought to auction...

    Sophia & Josephine

My Silkie Rogelio was attacked out of the blue by my dachshund and died the day after the attack. A sweet friend showed up today with these two seven week old Salmon Faverolles today! I thought it was such a nice thing for her to do. I named them Sophie & Josephine and we will call them So &...

    Dog attack!

Rogelio died just after noon today. 🥲 I loved that silly chicken. Before pics of her with one when she got too wet in the rain and I wrapped her in a towel, rocked her and fed her strawberries. 😂 The other two pics are of her wound. The actual hole in her skin isn’t as big as it looks but it was...

    Dog attack!

Our backyard is fenced and our chicken coop with an attached large run is in the backyard. We were never letting them out of the run at all. I picked up a few more chickens and I decided to see if the dogs would be ok with letting the chickens out in the yard. It has been going great. One of...

Red Sex Links not laying 26wks

If they are red sex Link, they are hens. They are cross between a Rhode Island Roo and a Leghorn Hen. Hens will be red and Roos are white. (Backwards from their parents) That is how they can sell them to you as hens and bit straight run. You can tell when they are babies. Are they getting...

    Chicken irony…

Is it a tad ironic that Teriyaki and Marsala will only lay in the roasting pan?? 😂 (It doesn’t sit on the floor right inside the coop door, it sits up on a shelf.)

22 week red sex link not laying

Her four ‘siblings’ have perfectly fluffy butts and are healthy. My Japanese Bantam roo and 2 hens are also perfectly healthy. I don’t see how Little Red’s problem would be anything contagious. I’ll get her fanny feathers clipped tomorrow. Two of those hens laid yesterday!

22 week red sex link not laying

She was definitely the runt. I called her Little Red from the start because she was so much smaller. She is about as tall now as the others (they are BIG birds), but skinnier and not much comb at all. I read something that if she has a nasty butt you don’t want to eat her eggs. Thoughts?

22 week red sex link not laying

One of them started laying! another of my 5 Red Sex Links I posted about a while back about having a nasty butt. Still nasty! They are 24 weeks old and she has had a nasty but from the time she was a few weeks old. I have wormed and bathed. And bathed. And bathed. Her comb is also very small...

22 week red sex link not laying

I had 5 Red Sex Link that are 22 weeks old and still no eggs. They are fed layer pellets and get plenty of grit and egg shells (baked). Ant ideas why they are not laying? My Japanese Bantam and a Silkie are laying fine.

8 week red sex link with nasty butt

I have 5 Red Sex Link girls that are 8 weeks old. I got them when they were 2 weeks old. One was the runt of the batch being noticeably smaller, but not ridiculously tiny. Now, the small one has a nasty butt and seems to be at the food a lot more than the others. She has grown, but is quite a...

    Love my little flock!

Thank you for the input. My chicken enclosure is also inside our fenced yard. It is fenced with what mom and dad always called hog wire. Will hardware cloth jeep out snakes? What else can get in through the chicken wire?

    Love my little flock!

I’m new here! I have been wanting chickens for quite a while and my 20 year old twin daughters decided to just do it. We built an area that is 8’ x 16’ total. The north 4’ x 8’ section is the coop which is 2’ off the ground, 2”x2” roosts along with a branch stuck in there that they like best...
