    Jan. 2022 Hatch-a-long

I brought them in and candled them and there was no movement. :/ It looks like she started with 13 or 14 eggs. Ten she pushed out, and today we pulled two out of her nest today (one was grey, one is in the incubator) because they weren't warm, and one or two that my daughter couldn't reach...

    Jan. 2022 Hatch-a-long

Well shoot! She rolled 5 more out of her nest last night. All had bulging air sacks, about to pip. :( Of course it was way too late for me to save them--no movement this morning and the eggs were really cold.

    Jan. 2022 Hatch-a-long

I forgot about hatch alongs since I'm not the one incubating. Last month our indian runner just up and went broody. She had only been laying for a couple months, so we were shocked. She laid a bunch of eggs in a few days and found herself a hidey-hole under the stairs in the barn, and started...

    November 2021 Hatch-A-Long

All three hatched and are doing great! Just in time for T-day! Right now we're at 10 ducks, so I should stop now that I'm at a good even number. Now I just need a male Rouen so I can separate the two (runners and rouens) and hatch in the spring. :D This is a never ending loop, isn't it?

OMG the level of fluff is too much! So much cuteness!

    November 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I don't know if it made that much difference, but my incubator lives on my kitchen counter. I have 4 kids (teens and preteens), so it's far from quiet in the afternoon and evenings. Can't help but wonder if that's why they tend to hatch during the day when we're all gone.

    November 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Our buff and white Indian Runners finally started laying, and my daughters insisted that I incubate them. I've only incubated duck eggs that were shipped, so I wasn't expecting for *all* of them to develop. But sure enough, all three are growing. They're due to hatch next Sunday or Monday...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I lost Lucky sometime yesterday. I had external pip in the morning, but when I went to check them last night, poor Lucky was gone. I did get an early bird surprise today at work! And the third egg is looking pretty good, pipped and still peeping.

    Lucky the cracked egg's hatch-a-long

Sadly, Lucky didn't make it. I had external pip yesterday morning, but by the time I checked it last night, Lucky was gone. I opened up the egg and couldn't find any reason for them not to have made it. As far as I could tell, the duckling was perfectly formed and ready to go. :/

    Lucky the cracked egg's hatch-a-long

Lucky made it to lockdown! I was sure I'd lose the egg when I dropped it, but this much be a tough little bird. I put the egg in wax-side down in hopes that it won't interfere with hatching. It's softer wax (from a melter because that was quickest), and scented, so I don't know if that will...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

My three went into lockdown today. I candled last night and Lucky is still kicking. I put it in wax side down, so hopefully it won't interfere with hatching.

Yeah, I'm afraid of having one explode. I'm sure it'll become obvious that it's not developing properly before it gets to that point. At least I hope.

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Are ya'll sick of me yet? lol Rouen eggs, day 11. This one has no visible veins (it did at day 5/6ish), but the dark spot moves independently (not just floating, but wiggling). I feel like I should say goodbye and pull it out now, but the wiggling makes me feel a bit guilty. It is way too...

    Lucky the cracked egg's hatch-a-long

This is Lucky. They are a potential Rouen duckling. Last Saturday on day 4, I fumbled and cracked their shell, pretty badly. I got the cracks covered in wax as quickly as I could, and hoped for the best. We are now on day 11 and Lucky is still growing, so I thought I'd give them their own...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Ducklings are ridiculously cute! We had the one hatch on Friday, then when we were gone yesterday, the other two hatched. Even though we were gone, we were able to watch along thanks to the camera. Now #1 has to get used to having other ducks around after his day as a people. It is day 11...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

We've only hatched quail before, and that years ago (10+), so I'm pretty lost. :) Duckling #1 is out and drying off. Everything looks good as far as I can tell. The other two have pip holes, so hopefully they won't take too long--the first little one looks so pitiful trying to snuggle up...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I open up the hole a bit this morning and that seemed to give it the space to turn. In just an hour it's started pecking in a circle. :D Hopefully I'll have a new duckling today!

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

So duckling #1 externally pipped roughly 36 hours ago (less than 24 hours after lockdown). Since then, it has punched two more holes in the same spot. I opened up the incubator and it started peeping at me. I can see the end of it's bill and wing (?). How do you know when it's malpositioned and...

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I put the eggs in lockdown late last night, and it's a good thing I did because I have an external pip already! My mom side can't help but be worried about them being too early. But I candled and they're alive and wiggling. So hopefully things go ok.

    August 2021 Hatch-A-Long

My first three Rouen eggs are in lockdown. I couldn't resist putting the wyze cam in there, too. Did a quick candling of Lucky the cracked egg and they're still growing! They have an eyespot now and was wiggling around for me. Yay!
