Dog attack on 5 ms old pullet

My 5 month old Barred Rock pullet escaped yesterday and my dog grabbed her. I don't think that I've ever screamed so loud as when I saw it happen. She's currently in my house in a crate. The only visible wound is about a half inch tear on the flap above her vent. It bled slightly and then...

    Need a pep talk!

Need a little pep talk. I've read numerous articles here about raising chicks in the coop from the day that I get them. I have everything that I need and it's set up. I'm using a heating plate instead of the lamp like last time. Their area is secure and in a "see but no touch" setup. Temps...

    Burning chicken poop

Weird question- I don't have enough property to pile up the chicken poop and keep for composting. I'm going to burn it and didn't know if it was safe for the chickens to breath in. I'm super sensitive to smoke so I wear a mask when burning anything. Burn pile is about 200 ft from the coop.

    First molt?

One of my 10 month old RIRs looked fluffy on the chest. She's almost completely bald under top feathers. No redness, no pin feathers. Frankly she looks like a naked chicken! Lol. Acting normal and I don't see any signs of her being picked on. The other 9 aren't showing feather loss. I did notice...

    8 month old runt?

I have 10 RIR hens and they are 8 months old. I get 8 to 9 eggs a day but have never gotten 10. One of the hens looks different. Her tail feathers are not fully developed, her wings look different and her legs are more yellow than the others. They're all thriving with no issues. I just didn't...

    Question for Central Texas members

This will be my first winter with chickens. I have ten 6 month old RIRs. Their coop is a 12x16 converted Tuff Shed that has a loft (they have no access to the loft). The attached run is 12x16 and is covered in 1/2 inch wire cloth and has a roof over the top. The loft area has a big window that...

    Any Roos?

I have 10 RIRs that are just about 9 1/2 weeks old. I'm concerned that I have at least one but maybe more than one roo. One is fine but if there's more I'll be so sad. Btw, taking pics of chickens is one of the most laughable thing I've ever done. 😂 I know it's hard to tell from pics but if you...

    Chillin in the Texas heat

Chillin in the "air conditioning" on another unseasonably hot day in Texas. They love those frozen gallons of water. ❤

    Chicks gorging on grit

I've read other threads about this but my chicks gorge on grit. Now that they're out in the run during the day, do they need it? I have clay soil. They're crops are giant looking at times and they're always eating and also clearing out the grit in the bowl in the run. Can too much grit be...

    Weeds in my new run

Husband and I are almost done with the coop/run. The run area is covered in various grasses and weeds and I have no clue what 90% of them are. My chicks haven't been out there yet but I'm concerned that some things may be poisonous. There are SO many "definitive" lists out there on what can be...

    Help! Proper humidity in brooder

I received my chicks in the mail on Tuesday. All going well. They're in my garage. Today, it's really warm here and humid. Humidity in the brooder has gone up to as high as 75%. Chicks have been active and then one or two would just lay down out of the heat source. Not panting just sleeping. I'm...

1st time chicks in Texas brooder in garage

Hi there! I've read many of the threads but being a 1st time chick mama I wanted more specific advice for my area in Central TX. 10 RIR chicks coming tomorrow. I have no place inside to keep them because of space and 4 cats. I have a 100 gallon galvanized trough in my garage for them. Heat lamp...

    Hi!

My name is Joelle. I have my very first chicks coming April 18th. 10 Rhode Island Reds. We're converting our shed into a coop and setting up an area in the house for the babies.
