I am using the Manna Pro crushed oyster shell. Theyre not eating it constantly but I can see the amount decreases so I guess they’re eating it sometimes? But apparently not this one hen because of her eggs being the way it is.
Thanks for the tip!!
I have been giving scratch and peck organic layer feed.
I am afraid to give eggshells cause I’m afraid of egg eating habit. Do you think changing brand of the oyster shell would help?
Hello!
Today I found a broken egg in the nest. The egg shell is very thin, so I’m guessing it’s calcium deficiency. I only have 4 hens, and they have a constant supply of oyster shell. All the other hens lay normal hard shells. But this 1 hen has been having issues for a week now. And finally...
I am now convinced that the yellow fluid is the egg bloom. Somehow she has an over abundance of the fluid. Is that possible?
I caught her laying today, so soon as she was done I looked in the box. The entire egg was covered in the yellow fluid. But it was quickly drying. I caught a picture of...
Thanks! The color of the fluid looks about the same. I will monitor her belly to see if it gets bigger. If it does, I might do a chicken paracentesis. LOL! If it’s big, there’s less chance of puncturing other organs. I will monitor to see if she continues to have a lot of this discharge. I’m...
I am getting 4 eggs almost daily, and I only have 4 hens. So I don’t think it’s a broken egg. Unless they do lay more than 1 egg a day. I know it’s coming from the vent of this 1 hen because it doesn’t appear unless she’s laid an egg. And I have collected them previously right after laying. The...
No diarrhea or yellow mucus in poop. A couple of my chickens had diarrhea a week ago due to change of diet, but she was not one of them. And it’s resolved now. They are pooping normal.
I’m probably not going to do the procedure. I’m not well versed enough in a chicken’s anatomy, I’m afraid of...
It’s very sticky but it’s clear. So I don’t think it’s yolk. And it’s on the darker side. I’ll take a better picture tomorrow. There quite a bit of fluid and it goes all over the other eggs too since they all use the same box.
Hello all,
I have a hen that has been consistently laying an egg daily, but she always has this yellow discharge on the box and on the eggs. She doesn’t act/look sick. She has been doing this for the past week. None of the other hens do it so I am curious what it is. Is this normal? Is she sick?
Thank you!
They’re 1 year old. They’re having wet poop it seems. I posted it in another thread. I’m guessing from change of diet. But it could be something that’s why I posted.
Thank you for the encouraging words.
Hello everyone!
My name is Joyce and I am a new chicken keeper. I live in the state of Utah in the US. I recently inherited 4 adult hens from a family who was moving out of state and are unable to bring their chickens with them.
I’ve only had my chicken for 5 days. So far, I’ve only gotten 1...
This makes a lot more sense! They’re still pooping, so maybe not pasty butt. Sorry, I am using it as a description rather than diagnosis. I wasn’t sure what they have.
I feel bad not letting them free range because their run is small. We are in the process of building them a bigger run. But if...
Thanks!
So just to clarify, when you say now is not the time to free range, is it cause they’re sick? Or is it for other reasons like weather, season, etc? And yes, I am in the US.
Also, the chlorhexidine, do I add that to their drinking water? Or do you mean to use it for cleaning their vent...
Oh, I read that I have to add it to their dust bath to kill mites. So that is not true??
They were fed layer mash before with the previous owners. I’m feeding the small pet layer feed which consists of whole grains, seeds, and pellets. They free range for a few hours daily. They also get black...
