Please do not feed your hens bread. It isn't good for them. Treats are wonderful, how about grapes, blueberries, mealworms, melon, squash. Hens love meats the best, in my flock. Keep grapes in your pocket, though, and they will follow you anywhere! <3
Thank you to all who responded. I didn't quarantine the two newbies, and I hope I am not sorry about that! The "old 13" are giving them some trouble, so I am continuing to let them free range in the yard, while the new two are confined to the coop/run. Perhaps I will have to keep them there...
Please help. I have had a flock of 13 birds for one year. Three foot fence has worked just fine, as I clip one wing's flight feathers on each bird. I rescued two (also one year old) Americaunas last night, clipped them, and they flew directly to the top of the fence...For now I will confine...
I have my brooder lamps (heat lamps) plugged into outlets that are "wired" to a thermostat. They will go on (and offer more light to the hens) when the temperature drops to whatever I decide. How cold should I let the girls get? Fifty? I am unsure. My coop is insulated, so it shouldn't take...
May I say, as a newbie to chickens (mine are 6 months, and doing well), that a steady 5% of Diotomaceous Earth has helped my girls? I believe in this stuff as a daily supplement to keep parasites, like worms and such away. I have a shallow bin of it full strength (although you can mix with it...
GO for it. My chickens consider grapes, wild or store-bought a treat for all time. They will pick a bunch clean in seconds. Melon rinds are second best. I think they know what they need and like, as they only eat oyster shells and grit if they need them. Offer it, and they will know. I...
I have had a few days where some of the 13 I have layed in the same wrong place, but not all chose to do this. One day, there were seven eggs in a lily frond clump, nice "nest." Today I had two eggs in a puddle on a concrete "deck." Odd with the concrete, for sure. After the seven egg day, I...
I have one gold star that has laid a few double yolkers, no triples, and have not ever heard of one. The bird is not all that big, but lays hefty eggs reliably.
I am new to raising chickens, although this has been of interest to me almost my whole life. We ordered 12 one-day-old chicks, recieved 14, and lost one SLW three weeks later. We were told not to expect all to live, but it was devastating. We had a lovely (cute, insulated, heated, with...
