Official BYC Poll: How many chickens do you have?

We have 11 hens and 3 roosters. We are hoping the roosters continue to get along well together because we love their crowing! We can tell by the sound which one is calling to us

I gave my number of chickens a few days ago but have been having trouble getting the post-it box to appear. I have 25 new (hatched 9/8/10 or thereabouts) Barred Rocks, 7 Rhode Island Reds from last September and 7 Buff Orpingtons hatched in April of 2008. They are certified organic and I sell the eggs, but I don't know how long to keep them. I am only getting 6 or 7 eggs a day now from 14 adult hens, but they are moulting, and the days are getting shorter. I don't give them artificial light--let their bodies have a rest if that's what they would normally have, is my philosophy. But one of the Buffs was killed by one of my dogs recently, and she had no eggs in the pipeline. One died spontaneously the other day but I don't know why, so I gave her to the dogs for a treat. How long do they live? Could that one have died because she was old, or do I have to worry about some disease in my coop? I'd be grateful for any answers or speculations anyone may have as I am new to this: this is just my third batch of peeps.

There are 24 hens in my care. They are 17 months old and give me anywhere from 14 - 20 eggs everyday. I suppose I should cull the non-layers, but I'm not sure how you determine who is and isn't laying eggs. Also, they should be starting to molt and I am told that will affect their egg laying. Hope this helps your poll.

I have 26 chickens total. 23 hens ages 6mos to 2 1/2 years and one jersey black giant 2month old hen. I have three roosters-Donlyn, the metrosexual rooster that started as a comet hen and morphed into a rooster, Fiesty Roo, the white leghorn given to me, and Big Bird, a jersey black giant also given to me. The girls are comets, red stars, brown leghorns, white leghorns, light brahmas, ameraucanas, black sex-linked, black australorps, my jersey black giant youngster, and Peaches, my buff orpington who has cataracts. Of course they all have names and live in two coops. I tuck all of them in to bed at night and the cataract girls all get special attention. Sticky butt has a pendulous crop which I have operated on three times and she wears a crop bra most of the time; however, her skin has retracted nicely and she has gone braless for a month now. Once in a while, she wears it for rehab, but not near as much as she used to. It is usually a hospital around here, but everyone pulls through. I can't imagine life without them.

I have 8 adult girls 3 years old ( I think ) with one roo, 13 young ladies hatched in May with one roo that live in the greenhouse till I get the chicken house divided up to house them and 4 young Mille Fleur roos, one daddy MF roo, 2 mommy MF hens and 6 MF young ladies hatched this spring by the 2 mommies. In the banty yard are 2 brown Leghorns that one mommy raised from wee chicks. I want so many more. But next spring I have to improve my incubators... lost about 6 dozen eggs this year and had zero hatchings. Not good~~!!!

Thirteen, my lucky number! I ordered 12, they gave me two extra, just in case! We were sad when baby died, but are so grateful for the extra!
