Greetings!
It has been awhile since I frequented this forum but I'm back seeking the wise advise I know is found here.
I currently have a flock of Muscovy ducks (one drake and 6 hens) and 3 "bachelor" drakes (1 5 month old Pekin and 2 5 month old Blue Swedish). I know I need to deal with the...
But, she makes this noise first thing in the morning as she is getting down from her roost -- it is only in the high 60s then... that would certainly make sense during the hot part of the day but since I hear her at 6:05am awakening from her roost in the Camilla outside my bedroom window (yes...
I have a sick chicken and I don't know what is going on....I thought perhaps gapes but having read other threads here, it seems gapes is rare in chickens so I need to see what the collective wisdom of this site thinks about the following:
Brown leghorn hen, age 2 years
not eggbound
crop...
Joel Salatin is awesome. I think his son is the one doing the rabbits. I read about the pastured rabbits but will go look up the Raken House. Thanks for the pointer!
I have noticed with mine (which are about 3 weeks now) that some are brave/curious while others are not. I have a mixed batch: 2 each of barred plymouth rocks, black sex links, buff orp., and brown leghorms. My two brown leghorns are the bravest and Cleopatra is by far the dare-devil of the...
When I got the eight chicks, we used a galvanized tub as a brooder. But, they outgrew that and I was afraid they'd start pecking on each other out of frustration, so, I set this up.
The "fence" is an "small pet playpen" I purchased from Petco over a year ago to use for raising two small...
My three week old pullets go nuts over roots and dirt! I pulled up a mustard plant, leaving the dirt attached, and give it to them. Eight little pullets were all over that root like it was a double chocolate cake or something! They will nibble at the greenery but mostly, they want the fine...
That's good to know since they seem to want to make a diet out of it! That and roots. They weren't too crazy about the button mushroom I gave them...a couple of them gave it a side stare and quick attack peck before putting distance between them and the MONSTER MUSHROOM.
An odd thing I've...
I'm reading this thread through before commenting directly but I wanted to share this... my 2.5/3 week old chicks love dirt! and plant roots! They are not yet too crazy about the greens. I just gave them a mustard plant including roots and attached dirt. They went nuts -- for the dirt and roots...
ah, okay, good to know. are the spent hops also good for chicken feed?
The microbrewery in Myrtle Beach already gives their grains to a farmer. Now searching for local folks that might brew at home. Oh, I don't suppose a winery has anything of use?
This is great to know! Question: would the grains still be considered a fermented food? Also, someone mentioned hops...would spent hops be good to feed to the chickens?
You can also plant a hedge of rugosa roses. These roses will make rose hips which are nutritious for chickens and humans. Also, the petals can be eaten or used for making rosewater. The great thing is...these plants grow fast! I'm planting a hedge of them down one property line to separate us...
Last night I found a listing on Craigslist for muscovy ducks (10 ducks for $40 or 5 for $20). I inquired as to age since they had indicated they were not sure of gender mix except that one older duck included is a male. Here is the response I received just now:
"a few months old, the older male...
