I had a wolf spider that made her nest in my garden a few years ago. I got to watch her dig her hole and then do some hunting, and eventually, make her egg sack and care for all her babies! I like to think she and I shared a little bond because we were "expecting" at the same time...
Got a visit from the corp of engineers and long story short (insert drama here) we're now without our chickens.
I'm sad! Can I still visit here and live vicariously through y'all?
i would not have guessed australorp for her, because she looks so different from the other - yellow beak, instead of black, much more spotty legs and LOTS more white - and they looked very different as fuzzy chicks, too. that wouldn't all be explained by the gender difference would it?

ok - they're 4 weeks old, and I think I know what some of them are, but am wondering about a few still, and trying to figure out gender. I admit, though, that for all your thicker/ thinner leg, rounded/pointy feather, bigger/pinker comb ideas, I just don't have enough experience yet to know how...
When we get a package that will not fit in the mailbox, they come to the door. If we're not home, we get a note in the box that says we have to come pick it up at the post office. they will not leave it.

there is a broadcast poison you can use that you cover the yard with and it is supposed to keep them out for up to year, but since we eat things from the yard, we've never tried it.
my father in law uses grits and boiling water - seriously. sprinkles some grits around the mound, goes back...
I'll handle the herb growing and soap making sessions! i need someone to teach me how to make cheese... so sign me up!
