    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hellooooo...... Terri has PM'd me, so I thought I'd stop in just to post and introduce myself. As you can tell, I live in Wisconsin - on the western edge. I won't be posting very often, but I'll try to keep up on the thread. My time seems to fly away before I know it. Had a great day today...

So upset!! Lost my first chicken to neighbor's dog!! :(

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your pet this way. I have also lost chickens to neighbors dogs, and so now we have to keep them in an enclosed run. We used to free range them, then put them into a 50' x 200' fenced in area. The dogs still got into that, so we made the smaller enclosed...

    WAHOO! Hubby started the coop.

That is so awesome! Do you have your chickens already? Many years ago, when we had our first chickens, they were almost laying eggs by the time the coop got built. I did throw a temporary, windowless shelter together with scraps.

    Sewing machine recommendation

Have you considered a Brother sewing/embroidering machine? I got one for a little under $300 (now $400) at Walmart a few years ago. It does both embroidering and regular sewing. I have made thousands of things on it, and it is still working very well. The embroidery option was a whole new...

Is it to late??Egglaying nest boxes

Congratulations! First eggs are always a lot of fun. You can make some nesting boxes yourself out of things such as a 5 gallon bucket on it's side. Have fun!

Totally new: Planning coop would like opinions and ideas

Wow, look at all the wonderful answers you have gotten! One thing - can you build the nesting box so that it protrudes into your garage? That way, it won't take up any floor space, and you can open it up from inside the garage. Notice I say it. If you only have 4 hens, you only need one...

What breeding projects are you working on or you want to work on.

Quote: Hi, Nice birds.. I have considered Hamburgs for the same reasons. MPC has/had Blue Hamburgs, which is supposedly the largest of the Hamburg breed. Me, being a blue fan was very tempted.. (Some day.) For know I am happy with my lines of Blue Ameraucana and Marans.. Some day though...

    Shouldn't use a thermometer -- grrrr!

I only use the thermometer when I am setting up the brooder. Then, I take it out when I put the chicks in and judge by their behavior. I once had a thermometer break, so I don't have it in with the chicks any more.

Totally new: Planning coop would like opinions and ideas

First off, I have to congratulate you on your awesome graphic. You can go to a library and check out a nice book on coop design and chicken care. That would be a great way to start. I'll try to answer some of your questions. Yes, you should have a roof over the run. It does not have to be...

How secure should my run be?

You could maybe just use chicken wire over the top. That should keep the chickens in and the hawks out. I won't keep out predators such as raccoons at night, but you are planning on locking them up every night.

I am Brand New Just Like My Baby Chick!

Welcome! I am also pretty new to this forum. Do you know what kind of chickens you'll have?

    Mean chickens!!

If you separate them, when you put her back she'll still be at the bottom of the pecking order. Now that you own a flock, you can really see what is meant by pecking order. There wil always be one. Someone is at the top and someone is at the bottom. If she is not getting injured, you can...

wrong or right decision... please weigh in.

If you do not want to hatch any eggs, you can find him a home. If you do want to hatch some, you'll need to keep him. You could then house him seperately to give the gals a break.

My White Call Ducks - New Photos!!!

Scott, we had a small children's swimming pool that they could really swim around in. They were so much fun to watch diving around. It was more difficult in the winter, since they didn't have swimming water. We sometimes took them up to the hosue and filled the bathtub with cold water to give...

    Barred Rock Thread

I have 2 barred rocks. They both are "grandchickens", meaning they live at my house, but are owned by grandkids. I ordered some assorted pullets for the grands to pick for pets. One of the BR is a cockerel, and he is a very, very nice bird. He is actually coming when called and follows...

Hen is Hanging out in the coop

I'd check her very closely, see if she has an injury. It is also possible she is egg bound. I think it is a bit young for that problem, but it is a possibility.

My White Call Ducks - New Photos!!!

I'm not an expert on call ducks, but I sure do like them. We had several as pets many years ago, and I miss having them around.

What breeding projects are you working on or you want to work on.

I would like to get a flock of Hamburgs that has a good size (a bit larger than the SOP), lays well, and is hardy. I am not going to be concerned with the coloring or trying to make show birds. I want a flock that can reproduce itself. Always depending on a hatchery to buy chicks is not...

    EE's gender check **UPDATE! 08/30/10**

Congrats on the egg and even more congrats on the pullets, since you said you can't have roosters. One of our all-time favorite chickens was Lady, she was a RIR/Auracana cross. She laid lovely big brown eggs for several years. She was very tame and looked similar, but had muffs and yellow...
