What do people mean by "it's animal cruelty to dye a chicken"?

Okay, I'm a newbie, so I'm just discovering the chicken-owner subculture here, but... I don't get it at all... WHY would anyone want to DYE an animal? Is it the chicken equivalent of dressing up a pet in costumes or ribbons? At first I thought it was just an individual whimsy but now it's...

can you have a "flock" of just 2 chickens?

My friends got 6 chicks - 2 died. Then they gave us their 4 after a year, last summer. Then a fox got one this June and another one died yesterday. So now we're down to 2. Now what? Is it okay to have just 2? Their roost/coop fits 3 comfortably and and it's tight with 4 but they used to...

    Ruptured hernia

Olive, I get it about the economics of it, but if you are a vet, and you have your own chickens, why would you flat out refuse to see other people's chickens in your office when someone does want to bring their chicken in for treatment? Because even if they haven't specialized in poultry care...

    Ruptured hernia

I didn't grudge the money, but I did feel bad for the poor hen having to go through two weeks for futile treatment. Yep. Although what I'm amazed by is how difficult it is to find vets who actually treat chickens as part of their practice. We live out in farm country and we have lots of large...

She's gone. Found a vet (who has chickens herself) who was willing to euthanize her. R.I.P. Buttsky

    Ruptured hernia

Quote: Thanks, chkn. I'm a psych nurse, so medical issues won't be what I deal with, unfortunately for my chickens! My husband said the same thing - that if we don't even try, this is going to keep happening and we'll never know what to do and how to heal them. But I just can't see putting any...

    Ruptured hernia

Uggghhhh. She won't open her beak even a teeny bit, so the syringe is just dripping onto her feathers, And she was practically sitting in the water bowl so I took it out because I don't want her getting wet again. I don't know what's worse - getting chilled or dehydration. I'm going in favor of...

    Ruptured hernia

Imp, thank you for those links, especially that #16! I had tried to search earlier but was probably too frazzled to enter the right search terms. Okay, any suggestions as to how to get some fluid down her? Syringe? Or just leave her vitamin-electrolyte-water bowl in with her and let her drink...

    Ruptured hernia

Olive, thank you for the clarity as well as gentleness of your post. I'll show your post to my husband when he wakes up and hopefully that will make him agree to kill her. Unfortunately I am not up for killing a chicken at this hour of the night. (It is almost 1:00 a.m. here) But tomorrow...

    Ruptured hernia

Yes, but not inside. I wonder if I should have put any on the inside. Did you mean you are not supposed to use neosporin if you are also giving them painkiller? Could that be because neosporin contains a topical painkiller in it? Although I can't imagine it would be enough to cause an overdose.

    Ruptured hernia

Quote: Thanks, Memphis. That's exactly it. There is only one vet in our area who will see chickens - he's semi-retired and he's on vacation and therefore unavailable. The vet I took her to last time was willing to see her, but didn't really know what was going on either with her or with my...

    Ruptured hernia

My husband didn't want to give up without trying. I would love for her to live but I have grave doubts. I think if a bowel obstruction doesn't do her in, peritonitis or sepsis will. I'm trying to get my husband to agree that we will put her down if it looks like she's suffering and not going to...

    Ruptured hernia

One of our Black Australorps = she had a huge swollen bulge under her vent - we first noticed it a year ago. I tried to drain it with a syringe thinking it was ascites but just got a tiny drop of blood - no fluid. A couple weeks ago I took her to a vet because it had been getting bigger and...
