    Rabbit breed?

Possibly a Rex or MiniRex. If the fur is velvety smooth and soft, it's probably a Rex. The size would detemine if it is a MiniRex.

    poop board scraper solution

I am filling about a 5 gal bucket a week and put it on the manure pile from our horses. My flock is currently 28 birds with 22 more in brooders and eggs in the incubator.

    poop board scraper solution

I had heard about the drywall scrapers, but my problem is reaching the back edge of the board without getting poop on your arms. It is also very convivient that the perch outside the nest box is exactly the right height to hold a 5gal bucket to receive the scrapings.

    poop board scraper solution

My poop board is about 2.5' deep and 5.5' wide. It is also close to the roosts to maximize the usable space underneath. Recently I saw a "shrub rake" and bought one. It is an excellant poop board scraper. It is about 9" wide and works wonderfully for cleaning the large area. It also has a...

New Rooster, How long before I can free range him

I have let new birds out the next day. They always come back in with the rest of the flock. I would think 2 weeks is plenty of time. In reality, you won't know until you try it again.

    which would you keep?

Quote: I did not quarantine because a significant percentage of my flock came from the same seller. If her flock had anything, my flock already has it. Also, the Silver Lace and my Barred Rock came from the same flock a few months ago so I was willing to take a chance on adding them. No...

    which would you keep?

Forgot to mention that when they are not free ranging, the Barred Rock hides in the coop because the Silver Lace beats him down if he goes out in the pen.

    which would you keep?

I have 25 hens (mixed flock) and until recently only 1 barred rock rooster. He is a pretty good rooster - not too rough on the hens, not too people aggressive, and alerts to predators (got the attention of the flock and me prior to a fox attack). 2 days ago I added 2 more roosters. A yound...

First hatch complete with detailed analysis - warning long post

I am using a still air incubator. I thought 99.5 was the same for both, but I will try the higher temp when I load later today. Thanks for the tip.

First hatch complete with detailed analysis - warning long post

I did have 1 chick that went almost 24 hrs from pip to hatch and did just fine. The only one I helped out I am convinced would have died in the shell based on his condition. As it is, I expect the chick will die regardless. Give them time - many of mine went through a long rest after pip...

First hatch complete with detailed analysis - warning long post

All of the eggs were picked up. I really wanted to add some Marans to the flock, which is why I paid $1 per egg and drove over 50 miles each way to get them. I did not crack the eggs - just a float test.

First hatch complete with detailed analysis - warning long post

I have just completed my first hatch of eggs in an incubator. I am using a Little Giant incubator with automatic turner. The temperature was maintained at 99.5F and the humidity was 30-40% for the first 17 days and then raised to 55-60%. Due to a calculation error and eagerness, the eggs were...

    Major Clean-up

If you are referring to powdered/pulverized lime, then your animals are safe. In fact, it will likely help your grass seed. We use lime in the yard, horse stalls, etc all the time. It is safe for kids to get on their hands. If you are tossing it all over the inside of the coop, I would wear...

    Nesting box and doorway sizes???

My door is 12" wide and 18" high. My buff is one of the smaller hens and she has no problems. The nest boxes are 12x12" and she sits in there just fine.

    shaveings or wood pellets?

Quote: I have used a lot of pellets in horse stalls and also used sawdust and shavings. Pellets won't smell worse. In fact they will probably keep the smell better. The key to pellets is in the prep. We found it best to add about 6 gallons of water to 80 lbs of pellets this let's the pellets...

Anyone house chickens and caged rabbits in the same area?

Quote: When I was a teenager we had rabbits and chickens in runs that shared 1 fence side of each cage. Shortly after the rabbits started breeding, we had 25 rabbits die in less than a week. A vet friend diagnosed the cause as coccidiosis. I don't know for sure that it was caused by the hens...

    coop flooring question

The gaps between the boards are less that 1/8". I will be using sawdust for the flooring cover (we have horses so we already buy it in bulk), so I think I am going to go without putting any plywood on the floor. If after the first few months I am having problems, I will modify the design. I do...

    coop flooring question

I'm planning to have feed and water inside the coop. Excess water/spillage were the fluids I was referring to.

    coop flooring question

I am starting construction on my coop and run. The coop is going to be about 5 1/2 ft by 12 ft and the run is being debated, but likely in the 4-500 sqft range. The run will have 2x4 wire fencing in the 4-6' height with hardware cloth around the bottom. Eventually I want to let the chickens...
