    Selling Extra Eggs? (OH)

Check w/ your county extension agent--they're usually a great source of info & can fill you in on any issues. But family, neighbors, friends should be fine & appreciative regardless.

    Saved from a hawk attack!

When you get a chance, you might want to check your buff closely. I had a hawk attack my marans hen, I ran out the door, he flew off, she ran off. That night, when she went to roost I brought her inside. She had a large (about the size of a quarter) nasty puncture wound behind her wing & a...

Bad Mr. Roo is pecking at me every day!

I have two roosters that at various stages in their lives decided to flog & spur me. A couple friends, who have had chickens for decades, suggested a spray bottle w/ water. If either of these roosters showed any sign of a possible challenge, they got numerous squirts in the face/ head. The...

    Washing eggs

Quote: Ditto! I rinse the eggs if there's anything on them. Poo in the frig is just terribly unappealing! '' The girls have plenty of nest boxes, but of course, they prefer to use the three favorites & after free-ranging, their feet are inevitably dirty. When they climb over the other...

    Coop is done...well almost :)

Congrats! ('' I really enjoy raising chicks, but like you, I was thrilled when the grow out coop was finished & they were out of the basement! I've got a couple more finish details to take care of on the coop, but it's safe & secure and NOT IN THE HOUSE! The next big thrill was when they put...

First practice crow, 7 wks - typical or ahead of the curve?

One of my EE "pullets" started the "I'm dieing of some dreaded disease" racket at about 5 weeks. Isn't that absolutely the most horrible sound? The first time I heard it, I sat straight up in bed & the dogs went nuts. sHe's now almost 9 weeks old & can give my older roos a run for their...

I found out why there were less eggs since it got warm.....

WOW! Hope you did't find it by reaching in the box! '' I haven't had snake problems yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I've seen them in previous (pre-chicken) years.

    Roost Bars!

I've got some baby roost bars (branch about 3" off the ground, attached to 2 x 4 blocks ) that mine were using before they were 2 weeks old. You'll find they like to perch on the waterer & feeder (& poop in them) or anything w/ a little height so probably the sooner the better.

    Feed and Foraging

As mentioned by other posters, feed consumption will depend on weather & situation. My 15 hens/ 2 roos free range year round w/ access to 9.5 acres (in piedmont NC). In the winter, they were going through a 50# bag of layer pellets each week free choice; now that it's warmer, the same bag will...

Questions about RIR roos (packing peanuts) as meat birds...6

Quote: I have a couple roos out of a hatch that were behaving similarly. The rest of the chicks would scatter when I reached into the brooder & these two little demons would puff out their chests & charge, then start pecking. It seems to be a stage they went through--they've settled down now...

First post and my first time with chickens!

'' I'm sure your chicks would love some fresh air & sunshine looking for treasures in the grass. From my experience, you do need to get busy on the coop ASAP! They will grow faster than you can imagine turning into escape artists & major poop producers! (My gang of 7 week olders goes out...

    Lost another baby!

Predator problems frequently happen at night & chickens are very vulnerable since their night vision is poor & they're sleeping. Can you lock them in a very secure coop at night & let them back out during the day? (That may be your plan w/ the hutch.) Mine free range during the day, but are...

buying chicks out of straight run bin

Fred's Hens : Do Not Buy Them From The Straight Run Bin!!!!!!!!!! They are likely to be 80% roosters. Buy some nice pullets or sex links and be happy, even if you pay a buck more. Geeeesh getting rid of all those roos after you've fed them and cared for them and not end up having enough...

when do I have to cover the brooder to prevent escape?

Several of my chicks were perching on the side of the brooder (32") at 10 days. And, like another poster said, my amberlinks were the troublemakers. Fortunately, they're cute enough to be forgiven! MHO, have a plan in place now--you made need it sooner than you think!

Feathers coming off top of back-above wings and around vent

Thanks for posting the question. I've got a couple hens w/ similar damage on their wing feathers--quills w/ no feather. No signs of mites, so hopefully it's just warm weather/ spring and a boy's fancy turns to . . . Hope they settle down soon--Poor girls!

I HATE installing Hardware Cloth!!! HELP!

I'm convinced those little squares in the hardware cloth aren't square '' so it's not our fault! I was covering vents--you know--smaller pieces that should be easier to install and keep flat. '' The top & the bottom of the 10" opening were the same, I lined the wire up w/ the board and...

Question on Temperature and Adding New Chick

Is your brooder big enough to have a light at each end w/ a cooler spot in the middle? You could use a larger bulb or closer to the bottom on one side for more warmth& raise the other? My (limited) experience is if you'll give them options, they'll choose where they are comfortable. I use a...

Simple solutions to gardens and chickens.

Thanks Royd for a great suggestion/ explanation--I appreciate a creative solution to a problem. '' My budget didn't include 600+ feet of fencing like I've seen suggested on here by others. I used construction silt fencing which is considerably cheaper than the welded wire w/ posts I had been...
