Sick hen with a twisted neck

So i quickly looked it up and it says that its caused by a vitamin E deficiency. The hen free ranges round a farm from first light until dark as she lives in the roof of a barn. So is she likely to have been suffering from a deficiency? She is also fed a commercial layers pellet diet although...

Sick hen with a twisted neck

Unfortunately i put her to sleep as she looked like she was suffering because she couldn't eat or drink and her neck was swelling. (And i didn't get any pictures). She was sat in a normal position, as if she was laying, but her head was twisted as if someone had taken it off and put it back on...

Sick hen with a twisted neck

One of my hens was a bit wobbly yesterday and today she is sat in the nest box and her head is twisted round so that her beak is pointed at the sky. Does anybody know what this could be and if its curable? None of my other hens are affected. Any help is much appreciated.

Chicken laid a slug full of membranes

I went out to the coop today and found a cracked egg and this lying beside it. It looked like a big cream slug and when I opened it, it was full of membranes and pink stuff. Has anybody had something like this before or knows what causes it?

    2 broodies in same shed

I haven't been on in ages. But an update to this post is that all the eggs hatched and the 2 hens co raised the brood. Ie chicks would go from under one hen to under the other one with no problems. :-) unfortunately there were only 3 girls in the entire hatch.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here are another couple of photos now the chicks are off the nest. Luckily the hens have decided that they are going to share their chicks with each other and they sit down and let all the chicks gather under them. One of them is currently walking about the garden with 2 chicks (first timer)...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here is one of my broodies with some of her brood. She's an old English game bantam crossed with a pekin and the chicks are 3/4 OEGB and 1/4 pekin. Just looking at the second photo do you think the chick on the right is a cockerel due to the size of it's feet compared to it's sister? ps the...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I checked the broodies again this morning. One of them has hatched all of her 8 eggs. And the other one is sitting on 4 chicks, 3 zipping eggs and 1 egg doing nothing. Hopefully i'll get 16/16 hatching. Ps i tried to take photos but my camera has died and i can't find batteries anywhere. So...

Can they hatch while in little containers?

Yeah you could leave them in. I hatch all my eggs in rings cut out of toilet rolls to stop them getting booted about by the first hatched chicks. Good luck with your hatch.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I went out to check on the broodies and seems as it is a few days before hatch day i figured i'd just let them out one last time before the big day. However on walking into the shed they were both cooing softly. So i picked one up and there is a little semi fluffed up chick and 1 pipped egg...

Thinking about breeding (very small scale)

    1. Hens basically have 2 settings. One where they lay eggs and one where they sit on eggs to get them to hatch. The majority of hens will stay in egg laying mode. However some breeds eg cochins and silkies are more likely to switch to incubating mode. This means they will stop laying anymore...
