I'm new to guineas this year. We have four, housed with a flock of chickens. They are about 10 months old. One of the four injured a leg several months ago. I thought she had recovered, but the past few weeks she has been limping again. Today when I went to let everyone out, she came out but...
Mine haven't been laying quite as long, but the eggs are much smaller than I expected. I assume they will get bigger, like everyone says. Today they laid a very tiny one, more like the size our guineas lay.
I don't really know the RIR breed but....we have a 20 week old Brahma that we just discovered today was a rooster. First time we heard him crow. It was quite a surprise. He would occasionally mount a hen before this, but I thought he was just trying to move up in the pecking order! He was also...
Depends how many you have I guess. I thought you could never have enough but now that we have 19 chickens, plus 4 ducks, and 4 guineas....it definitely feels like enough!!
We always switch ours when the first of the batch lays, so the others are getting layer sometimes weeks before their own laying kicks in. I'd say you're good to go! We were down to our last bag of grower and debating whether or not to switch to layer. We decided not to, bought the grower, and...
I have a chick that was being picked on (she is much smaller than the others) and while I initially had her separated, when we moved them out to the coop I decided to let her go in with the ones that were nice to her and have kept back the three "bullies" in the house. I am planning to...
I am glad to know it is normal. I knew they were going to be messier than chicks, and they sure are. They are so cute though, it's okay I was just worried that it was bad for them to drink so much, that they'd get over hydrated or something. But, since they seem to be doing very well I'm...
Thanks-
I am using a heat lamp, so there is light. I didn't know about the limiting water in the beginning so they have had it all day, hopefully it will not cause a problem for them.
We got 4 Cayuga ducklings today and they have been at their water non-stop! Is this normal? They are eating as well but I haven't even really seen them sleep- they are just constantly over at the water dish. Should I be limiting them somehow??
Mine are getting the flock raiser, though the woman at the farm store told us that the medicated chick feed is actually fine for ducklings. She said it used to be true that it was bad for them, but they have since changed the medication and now it's okay. I chose to use the flock raiser anyway...
Oh wow, I had heard they grew fast but I had no idea they grew that fast! We have four Cayugas coming this week and haven't even started on their house yet. We are hoping to get most of it done this weekend, looks like we better hurry! I love the look on your daughter's face....my kids are so...
They really do just crash when they are tired. It's so funny to see them just slump over. Well, it's kind of scary the first time, but after that it's funny.
I didn't know EE's could be all white .They are so pretty! Makes me wish I had included more in my order this year. One of our EE's is tan with some white, the other is a deep brown with a very dark brown pattern all over. I love how you don't know for sure what they'll turn out like.
I had some minor pecking issues going on so I upped their protein a little (threw in some cat food once in awhile, and gave them a can of tuna every week- they loved that). I did the blue kote thing too and that really seemed to help. Good luck!
