BackYardChickens Forum / feeding Chickens Black pepper. Try putting this in the search box im not the best with computers but that is the name of the post.
I found a post a few weeks ago here that was talking about feeding your hens pepper (black, cyanne) in a mash of sorts and it increasing there egg production. I tried it last week with cyanne pepper mixed in with a scope of feed mixed up with warm water to make a mash they gobbled it all up and...
So yesterday I come home from work and as usual I go to check my 55 meaties. Well as I bent down to get the water jugs I see, under the side where the tin is, a dead one. I figure crap we lost another one and that would make our 4th this far. As I move the tractor back I notice 8 more. They were...
Great set up we plan on doing ours the first week in Nov. I am hoping to have a set up similar to yours built and in place by then. I also like the crate idea in the freezer never thought of that but will be usuing it for sure I am a organization nut. Thanks for the awesome post
So about 2 1/2 weeks ago our Cornish hen decided to go broody so we let her sit, thought it would be neat to let her hatch them just let nature take its course. She had been doing great was sitting on about 6 or 8 eggs had plucked some feathers off her chest she was dedicated never leaving the...
I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday who has processed a bunch of birds in the past. He was telling me that he would age his birds in a big refrigerator for two weeks and all he would do is cut there neck/kill them and hang them in the fridge for two weeks keeping them below 40 degrees...

I agree I had most everything at home all I had to buy was the hot water heater thermostat $10 and a hydrometer/thermometer combo from wall mart $8 the only thing I can say about doing it this way is that you can't just plug it in and expect it to work you will(as in my case) have to...

Though this would appear to be good logic, there is a problem in that by the time the heat moves to the thermostat at the eggs and heats it up enoug to kick off the power to the bulbs the air near the bulb has already gone past the ideal temperature and there is a great deal of stored...

I have the thermostat close to where the eggs will be. My thinking in this is that is where it is important to know the temp. The light and computer fan is on the opposite side of the Bator
Good question I really hope to hear from somebody that knows. I'm new also and wanting to get some but am nervous that it will get to hot before they are ready for the freezer. I also heard that if they are done in the summer or hot weather that they will be a fatty bird. I wonder about that...
I am trying to get my blue bantam Cochin hen to go broody. I was wondering how many standard size eggs could I put under her and still have a good hatch?
