Transporting The Meaties to Their Doom

Just to clarify, our transportation crate is plastic, made by Kuhn, I think. Lots of ventilation, 2 trap doors, low profile, so they are snug and not jaostled about. It cost about $50, but was worth it.

    Red broilers trying to crow!

Ys, Red Broilers from Ideal. We've fed them 24% chick starter till this last bag of feed, and they've grown really well. Good little foragers, too. It's really almost comical sounding, as crows go, and not too loud. Old Rudy Kazoo doesn't do it during the day, and I watched pretty closely...

    Red broilers trying to crow!

And they're only 9 weeks old. Well, they sound a bit like a kazoo at this point. But we're in town and not supposed to have roos (we could only get non-Cornish x meaties in straight run). I was hoping they'd make it another 2 weeks till they went on their Special Vacation. I can't get their date...

Transporting The Meaties to Their Doom

I pay $2 per bird in a USDA inspected facility. Drop them off Monday morning, pick them up that evening, vacuum packed and labelled. The facility is part of a drug rehab program, so the participants get a job and some trained supervision. It's a really clean, well-run operation, and they treat...

Our got a couple of 'pinky' squirrel babies that must have fallen out of the nest. They were at their velociraptor best.

    Red Broilers

I've got some, they just turned 6 weeks old. I'm pretty happy with them. They have been vigorous & growthy. We put them outside at 3 weeks, in some of the hottest weather we've had in Oklahoma in many years. They managed just fine in the heat. They are really active and are very good at...

    Fierce meatie foraging

So I put my hand down in the brooder to see if Beer Butt Ugly, the most curious of the chicks, would come close enough to pet. He did. And he latched onto my finger so hard I lifted him off the ground. I think these little red broilers might be pretty good foragers. Think they'll go after the...

    Omega-3 eggs***Fish Meal Feed

If you've only got a handful of birds, get some sardines packed in water and give 'em a treat. My girls get a tin of it every week, more often if they are moulting. It costs a buck a tin; mash it up roughly with a fork and watch 'em go! Velociraptors...

How to keep chickens cool in the heat. Tips wanted!

I make sure the gals have a little mud wallow along the edge of their run, and a fan with a bag of 4 Blue Ice blocks in front of that, and a block of ice in their waterer. The other coop gets that, plus a white drop cloth over the run with a little sprinkle running on very low on top. It soaks...

How to cool off the coop?

Get one of those misters that you put out in the yard or on the deck in the summer - cost about $10. Let it lightly mist your coop. It'll also provide a wet little mud wallow for the girls to paddle in when they get too hot. We put 4 week old meatie chicks out this week, temps 105-109 (not the...

    Hens Stopped Laying...

How's your heat up there? Hotter than normal? It has decreased our egg production here. Also, 'hotter' feed won't help. Just a thought.

Beating a dead horse *Changed to Breeding Project Talk Update Post 71*

Interesting study. Thanks! My only question is, if all of these birds are crosses (not breeds), how are you going to have a breeding program? They won't breed true. Are you going to be selecting for certain traits, and if so, which ones? Sorry, I've always been a science geek...

    Hubbard meat chicks?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but Hubbard says not, that they grow slower the first few weeks, allowing for stonger bones, before putting on weight at a quicker clip. Interesting to see that Hubbard also produces the red broilers as a Label Rouge option. I only know what I read on their web...

    Hubbard meat chicks?

Anyone use these? The white ones, I mean; I think most red broilers come from Hubbard as well. There's a place here that raises a lot of the white hubbards to butcher and sell, and they will sometimes sell the chicks when they get them. Just curious about the differences between them and cornish x.

Just moved the meatie chicks outside

Thanks! It does seem to help them to have a wet spot. My hens have a little mud wallow, and they line up for that. The meatie chicks have been doing like wise. The mister is creating enough water that flows into a corner of the run for them and the whole set up seems to be working. They are...
