I had this happen to over half my flock last year, and now I have an entire new batch, and it's started with these girls now as well. I've already lost around 10 of my 400. I find 1 or 2 hens dead everyday. NO pecking, just an overly stretched vent, that is bloody and sometimes, but not always...
UPDATE: Spoke with someone in the area who has been raising chickens for over 30years, VERY knowledgeable. Apparently, it was what I feared...it was almost certainly Marek's. I had to cull, but it was best for her and the rest of my flock.
Well, I will definitely try that. She sure has a lot of energy though and always has food but you never know. Didn't know that not getting enough to eat could do that. Thanks.
I posted earlier about a 10 week old Pullets that's never had a problem and all the sudden this am, she was shaking badly and is SPRATTLE-legged? Never had a problem with her before. What can cause this, and how do I fix it?
Help?
Thank you!
Thanks. She also has another symptom. She's sprattle legged, but she's never had it before today, and she's about 10 weeks old. Could it just be weakness doing it?
If you find a cure to this PLEASE let us know or PM me!!!
I had something that sounds EXACTLY like this about 2 yrs ago, and I ended up losing all my flock, which was my business. I refused to sell sick birds. I lost about $30,000 total. This is a NASTY thing, and I tried EVERYTHING AND I MEAN...
I'm going to post this here instead of on each post.
I have always had a problem with the birds pecking, and pecking until they kill each other. I've lost MANY birds this way.
I found what's called a "Flock Block" at Tractor Supply Company. It is a block of compressed seeds and molasses, etc...
If you get a FLOCK BLOCK at TSC it will stop your pecking. They peck the block of seeds instead of each other. Also satisfies all their nutrient needs so they don't start pecking to begin with.
Most definitely go to TSC and get a FLOCK BLOCK. Theyve been out since summer, and they are amazing. They have STOPPED my pecking issues! They give them something to peck at instead of each other, and have all the vitamins/minerals they need to make them just beautiful. Helps their feathers...
Their mites. All chickens have them. You can dip the birds in a chemical or natural bath to kill them, but I heard from a lady yesterday, that the best thing is to put a pinch of garlic powder in your gallon of water. That the mites won't like the way they taste. I'm doing it before we get them...
I don't know what you do for it, but I do know that an egg breaking in them CAN kill them. I'd do my best to clean it all out with out hurting her. Someone else know more than me, I'm sure.
I just went to go check the girls, and I found one by the door. She can't really stand well, seems like she can't get her footing or something. But she keeps shaking? If I hold her securely, she stops, but as soon as she hears a noise or I put her down, it starts again. She's got a little food...
Oh, I've lost so many from this bunch! It's killing me! I'm not even 100% sure how many...somewhere around 40-45 of the 160, I think. Always the smallest ones for the most part, but even some of the full sized heavy breeds. And I've noticed for some reason that the bantams are having a real...
Well, I guess something was wrong with their temp, because once I fiddled with their heat lights, they did better. I still lost a few, but they're all doing good now. I did show them how to eat and drink, and they are on the correct chick starter...
NOW my problem is I had babies ordered before...
Hi all. I'm new here, but not new to raising chickens. I've raised, bred, incubated, and sold...lots of chickens, but I stopped for about a year and a half, so things are kinda fuzzy again. I need some help. I purchase 150 baby chicks from the big hatchery here in Texas. First day was ok, lost...
