Newbie to Chickens: We got our first set of chicks back in February (2011), 3 Speckled Sussex (2 turned out to be males and one was a girl.) They were in a straight run bin so we figured we would get at least one male. We then got a second set of chicks in March (2011), 6 Assorted Red...

Webworms - will they eat em?

I don't know where everyone else lives, but here in PA we get these webs that form in trees (just looks like a cluster spider web...) The worms that develop look pretty much just like a small caterpillar. They feed off of the leaves of certain trees as they are growing in the webs. I've heard...

Webworms - will they eat em?

They are a little fuzzy. Not too fuzzy though... Oh-man I hope they still eat them! I hate these little things!

Webworms - will they eat em?

We have a very large black walnut tree that has webworms all over it. Last year we had the tree sprayed, but since we have the chickens this year, I wasn't too keen on doing that again with the chemicals involved. Right now the worms are still in their webs and just leaving droppings (yuk!)...

To Keep a Roo or no?

Yup, you can eat fertile eggs. You may notice a small speck of red attached to the yolk, especially if it was left with the hen for a day or so before finding it. I usually pick it (the red spot) out and eat the egg like usual. I don't notice anything different (taste wise.)

What treat did your chickies get today?

tomato cores, apple cores, apple peels, pepper cores/seeds, zucchini ends, spaghetti O's (I know it's not the best for them, but they absolutely love it!), dried up bagels.... I have a 3 year old, so we tend to have a lot of partially used food items... anyone with toddlers knows what I mean...

Snake had duckling about halfway down (Now w/pics)

Got a snake problem here myself (black/rat snakes). They live in an old well on our property. At first we let them live because they do help control the mouse/rat population, control bugs, etc. But then they started leaving skins/sheds in our attic/basement. Then we started losing baby birds...

    Help/ Picking Bloody..

How old are they and how big of a space do they have? Are they still in their brooder? I had nine of them in a fairly large brooder but by 4-5 weeks old, I had to rescue two of my own and I realized it was because they were getting too big for the space. As soon as I moved them out to their...

    5wks old outside/Did I do it right?

That's what I did with our chickies a little over a week ago and they are doing really well. The other night it got down into the 30's - so I gave them a 250 watt bulb, otherwise I would use a 100 watt bulb. I was actually opening the door to the outside run and letting them out when we get...

How many of you have your chicks in your house?

Yup, me too! Just took 9 outside to their coop last week and they were raised in our dining room. We have two in the dining room right now that are only 2-3 weeks old. Very dusty, but worth it! To each his own I guess.

No More Chicks At Retail Outlets? What do you think?

Being a teacher, I could do on and on about the behavior of our youth and their parents! Whole other thread! I would not be opposed to buying chicks "behind the counter." But I do agree that I hope they don't do away with them all together. I know the staff at our local tractor supply is...

    Pecking Chicks? Picture!

I'm pretty new to this too, but I don't think there is anything to worry about unless someone is missing feathers or bleeding. I am having a pecking problem right now but we are talking missing feathers and blood. Then they just keep going after that same spot. I've had to separate for a...

pecking - blu kote spray question?

thanks for all of the replies! I'll try putting her back in with everyone this afternoon when I let them out of the coop for recess. Yeah, I was trying a test spray (since I've never used it before), so I sprayed it in my pure white sink in our half bath...... uhhhhhh, holy cow is that...

pecking - blu kote spray question?

Hello all! I have a group of 5 week old chicks that I just put outside in their coop. Right before I took them out, I noticed that one of the chicks was getting pecking on her/his lower back to the point of losing feathers a little bleeding. I kept her inside by herself to clean the wound and...

    Full crop versus Impacted crop

I was just curious what the difference was between a regular ole full crop versus an impacted crop. My 5 week-old chicks have really large chests, but they are acting completely normal....? What's the difference?
