You ordered a good variety of chicks! And from a good hatchery!
Here is some info:
Golden Sebright Bantams have an alert, stylish, well-balanced appearance. The tails are full and well expanded while the large wings are hung low. Sebrights are the only breed that has males which are...
This order has my red, grey, black and white silkies.
A trio of Golden Phoenix, and a trio of BB Red Kraienkoppes.
3 Black Jersey Giants, and 4 unknown....
YAY!
Ordered 38 from ideal.....PO called me about 4pm...All arrived alive, and in perfect shape!
I have ordered from Crackel, privette, MM, and Ideal hatcheries in the past 2 years. Last year i did Ideal, All arrived alive and well just like my recent order.... Grew up to be excellent...
When I was paying for all my supplies, i did in fact complain to the owner at the register! He tried to tell me he doesnt go to the back often, and wasn't aware the chicks were forgotten in a bag!
Well whatever, all i know is these chicks are thrieving...im glad i got them.
And i will...
I have had similar issues...what i did was once the younger chicks were (for the most part) all featherd out, around 3-4 weeks. I mixed them with the older ones. The younger the better, once they get older (the males especially) become territorial around 8-10 weeks.
Another hint to doing this...
I Hate Racoons!
2 years ago I had a family of them move into my area, they found my chickens in no time! I lost about 10 chickens to racoons in under 3 nights!
They dug under my cages, ripped wire, OPENED DOORS, pulled chickens through very small wholes....it was a disaster..
I had to spend...
Personally...
I have had bad experiences with week old chicks eating scratch with mother hen. I had several die last year, and i believe its because they got a hold of scratch from another group of full grown birds.
My hens tend to eat the chick starter with the babies...never had any problems.
I have always given mine yogurt, sliced appel, and a little carrot cake every once in awhile.
However; I have had chicks not accept the yogurt...but others have..... the ones who did accept it LOVED IT! Especially the kind with little bits of fruit in it!
Food-Food-Food
Chickens, and chicks associate you to food! The younger they are the easier it is to tame them.
For the chicks i would hand feed them, that way there not afraid of seeing you, or your hands.
The older they get, the harder it is. I have sucessfully tamed a few full grown...
Alright, so my order from ideal shipped out today!
So I went to the feed store, to get a new heat lamp and some medicated chick starter........
I went to the back of the store, with this young girl, to choose which lamp I wanted.... and we walked passed a brooder full of little turkeys, cute...

Same here.
Feed Stores tend to throw them into a large brooder, give them feed and water...and thats it.
Not at all properly taking care of them.
Its sad to say, but there in it for the profit.
Bravo, to those stores who educate poultry buyers and care for the chicks properly!
