I'm glad I'm not the only one with a freakish chicken! I've got one that does that too. She is a RIR cross. Shes the only one that I have that does it and I thought maybe I had a goose in my coop the first time I saw it lol! Sorry this doesnt answer your question but hopefully someone will...
I just bought pre treated lumber today. We were going to use it for the run. Should I return it or if I paint it (which is what I planned on doing) is it okay?
Thanks for the input. Do you think the others are RIRs? I got them when they were 3 days old from Rural King in the bin marked RIR pullets. Not sure where they order their stock from.
Here are some pictures of my RIRs. They are about 7 wks. old. The one on the left, Bailey, is lighter in color and her feet are a different color. Could she possibly be a sex link? Wanted to know what you guys thought.

I'm from Indiana our winters usually get pretty cold too in January and February. This winter will be our first for chickens. Our coop is not insulated but we will be running a heat lamp out there though. We already run one out to our rabbits and they seem to stay nice and toasty, of course...
Someone a couple of weeks ago on here found one through Sam's Club. They had a pic of it. It was real cute and only around $300. I wish I would have found it before we started ours from scratch.
Great to hear. I'm coming from the Muncie area. Wanted to make sure its worth my while with gas prices the way they are. Too bad its only til 1:00 though.
I was thinking of going DH outta town. Won't be able to stop me from getting some new chickies !!! Never been though. Is there usually a large selection?
I have the same problem too!!! It's comforting to know that others are or have went through the same thing. I'm being optimistic that this is just a phase and will end soon!!!!
My RIRs will be 3 wks. old Monday. When we first got them they didn't mind being held. Well that isn't the case anymore. They run to the other side of the cage when they see our hand coming near them. They chirp, shriek and flap their wings. I've tried hand feeding. I thought maybe they...
I am currently raising 4 RIRs, they are 2 weeks old. I REALLY want a buff Orp. Will these two breeds be okay together? If so where could I find one I live in Indiana, I don't know anyone else in this area that raises chickens and our local Rural King doesn't carry that breed.
Thank you for the useful information. I want to let them into the yard to free range. I'll just need to get over my paranoia. Being a first time chicken mom has got me a little nerve recked! LOL!!
