I am having a problem with one of my chickens cracking eggs and then eating the insides I assume ( the nesting material is always wet, with the cracked shell remaining) What can i do to stop this behavior ? I need this to stop because I believe this is causing my other chicks to keep from laying...
I used 1/2"x1/2" 19 ga on the bottom two feet , with 2"x4" welded wire over top of that for the entire fence itself. Seems to be doing all right , its been up for almost 3 yrs with no incidents to speak of.
I had to put one of mine down today(very hard to do)because of a dislocated hip. I used a .22 cal rifle to the back of the head, was terrible but quick and no suffering.
I used glue to apply the lineolum. After about a year the edges started to come up then I used 1/4"by 1 1/2" furring strips and attached them around the perimeter and it seems to be doing very well.
I am having the same problem as of late and really dont know which bird is doing it or what might be causing it. Hopefully some one might chime in and help out , it will be grately appreciated . Thanks.
Thats more than plenty. I have 8 chickens and 2 nest boxes and 90% of the time they only use one. I think the ratio is something like 4 to 1. for the nesting boxes.
I thought I saw somewhere on here in the past that 1 square feet per bird would be sufficent. Maybe someone else on this forum might have some other advice.
Just to be on the safe side, If it does start to smell, I put my coop approx: 100ft from the house on the opposite side of prevailing winds. This way i wont get a wiff.
The DW takes her sales skills to work with her and now we cant hardly keep up with the demand. Our ladies lay approx: 4 doz a week , so far we have not had a proiblem. I think its mostly by word of mouth because we dont advertise and our operation is not that big.
This happened to me the other day, and my coop up until this day, this has never happened and the only thing that i can narrow it down to is that its been very wet here over the last couple weeks and the humidity is high. I stirred it up yesterday and checked it today and it seems fine.Wet...
Yes always a work in progress. Yesterday with about a foot of snow and the wind blowing around 35 mph and temps below 0 the snow was blowing in my vents located at the top of the roof and onto my ladies roost .(never had this happen thus far) I had to fabricate a shutter and screw it in to place...
I believe this to be somewhat normal if yuor talking about the poo be frozen. Why you might ask?Wet poo in a coop that is below freezing is likely to freeze because of the temp not moisture as would be the same with your water if it was in the below freezing coop.(just like putting water in a...
I personally use pine shavings on the coop floor for the DLM and have used hay in the nesting boxes for quite some time and yet to have any problems that i know of with mites. Very clean in the nesting box and they love to situate it the way they like it. I also check my birds often for critters...
I would not worry to much about insulation as long as they are a cold hearty breed. Here at my place yesterday I had a temp. of 2* in my coop and a wind chill outside of 8 below zero and my RIR's were as perky as ever inside their uninsulated coop. Their tough little creatures.
Yes we have tried this but we do things a little different, were not much into the canned chicken so we use boiled chicken breast and then shred it instead. Also we just use the blu cheese dressing in the mix itself and just cheddar cheese on top. This is great with corn chips or put into a wrap.
